FWIW, you could also just buy a model 3 performance for that, too.

I agree with most of what you’re saying, but with cars, there will likely always be a better proposition for the goal.

However, often times, the fun with cars comes from picking a platform you’re interested in building it to some arbitrary goal.
You could, but for me the biggest part of what makes mountain/canyon driving fun, you really need a manual transmission. Don't get me wrong, I know there are guys that use the M3P for all kinds of stuff like drag racing, auto-x, road course, etc....but that's not something that I'd be into with a car that shifts itself. Or in the case of a Tesla, doesn't shift at all.

Yeah…….. I’m lucky to see 17 mpg average. My4Runner daily gets better mileage 🤣🤣🤣

Man...same here. I tried not to drive like an ass to save some gas lately😅.

Really liked the feel of 86's manual gearbox. Not sure to trade yet. Wanna wait a little to see if dealer could let us test drive first...

He talks quite a bit about the gearbox around 12:00 mark. Nothing but praise, it seems.

It’s really funny you mention that. I’ve always thought of the 86’s gearbox as fairly good but not very great. Sort of average based off the boxes I’ve owned. I’m hoping for the Supra's box to feel at least as good as the 86s. Maybe I’ve just been spoiled🤷‍♂️

Supras box isn't even in the same galaxy as the 86 box. BMW has never known how to make a shifter sadly.

Also I appreciate everyone telling their life stories of why they like automatic or manual or single speed spaceships, but let's keep this thread about the Manual and it's reviews, thanks.

As in the 86 box > the Supra box? Unfortunate to hear, as the 86 box isn't even that great. Were you able to drive a 6MT MKV during the press event?

Yeah, drove it for long while. It's your typical rubbery BMW ZF box. Gates are hard to get into, especially if you're trying to shift quickly. The heavier shift knob makes going between gears a little better than an M240i but overall, same stuff.

But we might have totally different ideas of good gearboxes, because I think the 86 is fantastic for a modern box. Short, mechanical, close gates with little obstruction. Feels like a tripod moving a shift fork, not a big mass of rubber like what we get with the Bimmers.

Rubbery manual> no manual for me, so I’ll take it. I think the S2000 box is or should be the gold standard of shifter feel. Of course, 99% of cars won’t match that feel, but in the same ballpark would be stellar. Thanks for the insight.

I find this interesting considering Toyota took the ZF manual box and pretty much modified it internally. Almost all reviews have said the gearbox feels nothing like the typical BMW gearbox.

Thanks, I appreciate your take on the ZF 6MT. I think that the 86 box is good, just not "great". However, a lot of why I feel that way isn't down to the shifter itself; the clutch take-up, engagement point, and the thunkiness when going into 1st come to mind. I'd rank the ND2 Miata gearbox as a better feel/experience overall.

I wonder if this manual will suffer from what I've seen with other cars on the market where Toyota ends up having to warranty a bunch of them thanks to synchro/gear grind issues. More manuals are warrantied nowadays than the auto equivalent. For instance on the FT86 club forum 90% of transmission issues was always with the manual yet you barely heard a thing about the auto despite 50% of buyers for both transmissions. I wouldn't be surprised if that's one of the reasons Toyota was hesitant to offer it and would explain why they have the i-MT function as a safeguard and pretty much offered in many sporty vehicles.

Could be. Every manual car i owned had some issue with it but nearly every automatic has been fine.

But then again i might just be an assclown and have no clue how to drive a stick properly 😂

No internal modifications at all. It is a GS6 as it comes, just with a different clutch kit, no sound deadening, and a heavier shift knob. The reason people like it over a standard BMW box is the knob, but if somebody says it doesn't feel anything like a BMW box, they're either lying or haven't driven a BMW manual.

That means Toyota lied again because they themselves said it's a modified box for improved feel. Most critics say it feels notchy and precise but I've yet to hear it feels rubbery.

If you watch the Everyday Driver review(around the 2 minute mark) they said they were hoping it wasn't going to feel like your typical rubbery feeling BMW box and they are happy to report it doesn't. Now these guys have driven tons of cars and many of them BMW.
