I don’t think cutting the metal will help in that case. The person who wrote up that article is actually a (retired?) sound engineer. If there was more to be gained, I imagine he would have told us.

We need more airspace, it’s not that the subs are bad, Toyota/bmw just did a horrible job at designing it.
There's no way to know how much air space they need without knowing the thiele small parameters. Just giving them more airspace without knowing what they require is more likely to be detrimental than it is helpful.
This. Plus since it's not a tuned port, just an 'exhaust port' - the port itself isn't really contributing in a meaningful way to bass extension... but it definitely is contributing to the amount of vibration and noise.
While you may be technically correct - I am no audio engineer - there have been many positive reports that this mod makes a significant improvement.
It absolutely does. I was not disputing that in any way, perhaps you misunderstood? It does not significantly change the frequencies produced by the subs. It does make them sound significantly cleaner however, which is especially beneficial considering how simple it is to perform.
