Has anyone cut this section out bigger to give the subs more air space to see if that helps the low end on them at all? Considering doing it to see if it helps at all

To clarify, do you mean cut the metal to open it up? Or the overlying plastic/carpet cover towards the rear?
The former is probably unhelpful
The later, as Zrk said is advised

I’ve already done the port and stuffing mod, I’ve read that discussion that’s where I got the pic.
I don’t think cutting the metal will help in that case. The person who wrote up that article is actually a (retired?) sound engineer. If there was more to be gained, I imagine he would have told us.

Yeah the factory subs don't have enough excursion to require more than what's listed in the thread you already followed. Any OEM form-factor replacements (ghost subs, etc) would be the same.

Replacing with something that wasn't low-profile on the other hand, would likely benefit from larger internal volume and port length adjustments... but then you're halfway to @Sam B 's full custom solution or similar... so just give it the full beans then. ;)

We need more airspace, it’s not that the subs are bad, Toyota/bmw just did a horrible job at designing it.

There's no way to know how much air space they need without knowing the thiele small parameters. Just giving them more airspace without knowing what they require is more likely to be detrimental than it is helpful.

This. Plus since it's not a tuned port, just an 'exhaust port' - the port itself isn't really contributing in a meaningful way to bass extension... but it definitely is contributing to the amount of vibration and noise.

While you may be technically correct - I am no audio engineer - there have been many positive reports that this mod makes a significant improvement.

It absolutely does. I was not disputing that in any way, perhaps you misunderstood? It does not significantly change the frequencies produced by the subs. It does make them sound significantly cleaner however, which is especially beneficial considering how simple it is to perform.
