AMG GTR's, Viper's, Porsche's and so on.... some of you guys seem to have money like the lokal farmer has hay in his barn.

Why do you even care about the new supra when you can afford all these cars?
Lol. Simple, I love cars and have been since I was a little kid like a lot of others, I am sure. Grew up in the 90’s when the JDM scene was coming a long. Remember buying a integra gsr new and dumping so much money into it. Went off to college, worked hard. That’s on top of a family and kids, lol, which obviously comes first.

right now indeed it seems that the mkv will not be special like the last gen. The last supra could compete with many cars well above its price ( 2-3 times the price) while this car could be a great car but it seems is only competing with cars in its local neighbourhood , that means it will be competing with 350z , mustang v8 , ford focus rs , jaguar f type, cayman 4 cyl and alpine a110 . For me even if it is 50k is a lot of money , i could afford it, but still it must be something really special to greenlight it. If i wanted something that is 2 seater 50k and very very light i could get the alpine , in europe they are not so expensive . I am waiting though because maybe when i test drive it , it will blow me away.

Exactly! Personally, I believe if Toyota had made a real Supra (in-house) and sold it for more, it would have been accepted much much better today. People would have paid upwards of $60k-$70k-$80k for a real successor, just like people paid (and still pay) $100k for a Nissan GTR....yes, a Nissan! Toyota wanted to gamble on low price high volume....this was never an ingredient for Supra's. They should have gone the low volume high price route...it would have been much better overall in my opinion.

Hopefully the GR Supra will be more of a genuine toyota product. If not then R35 it is :dunno:

@PerformanceSound, did you ever figure out or has anyone answered your calls for who the "target audience" is for the MKV ?

Yes, hairdressers....

The same audience that's interested in; Mini Coopers, Audi TT's, S2000's (I know, but it is), Miata's, and Boxters/Cayman's. I don't even consider the tiny MKV a 370Z, Mustang, Camaro, etc... competitor. Forget the performance aspect of it, the fact that it's a Japanese-badged German car that isn't a real Toyota car is enough to put it in it's own unwanted box and make it a non-competitor to the previously mentioned cars.

I'm always a defender but again, making some of these old guys who love numbers and want to maximize revenue likely never driven a fun sports car in their life. Perhaps moving forward after driving these vehicles, the execs starts to wonder at Toyota, not Lexus, Hm, this is fun, how much money can we spend to make one of our own? If this turns out successful, they can go and okay the project without worrying about the money because there's a business case for the first gen. I'm not going to pretend the car is anything else other than BMW supplied parts. How it drives is soemthing we'll see as we get closer.

Hopefully, the second gen will be toyota housed or more control from toyota, but just giving a perspective on the matter. Much like Jeremy Clarkson detested Porsche until recently with one car after many efforts, perhaps the big wigs at Toyota can come around and be content to come together and make something special because they believe in it whole heartedly it will sell AND put smiles on the enthusiasts. MR2/Celica housed car anyone? :)

YES! Thank you! When or if Toyota ever decides to build the car in-house, we can then circle back to this discussion....however, as it stands or what we see today....this is not a Supra.

I still have faith in the car and if we are going by styling and power, it's a Supra. Whether the heritage and matter of who made it or badging is an issue altogether that I rather not enter because it's a murky level on an unreleased vehicle. I want to see how the car drives and perform with the european market at the price point they have. This is where things will be fun.

We'll see if toyota has gone tone deaf, or are they gearing up to make a splash before electric motors kick in and remove the petrol fun for the enthusiasts. I juts wanted to shine a new path that perhaps they did their best with what they have and should hope this car sells so Toyota DOES make an in-house car for enthusiasts. And toyota, not Lexus mind you, because they have the resources and if enough people buy it and will it, toyota will follow. Even the old 2000 guys who probably actively cancelled all sports cars in their lineup in that era.

I agree with your sentiment but I have to disagree with your logic.

If the car sells i think it will only make them more confident that raiding the BMW parts bin was the right choice. After all the Toyobaru twins are pretty much the same formula are they not?

That is true, and I know toyota wants to save cost and have a one off sports car, but it makes me wonder if they made the car to save money? Or was the president unable to make the car have a business case without someone fitting the bill and making the car affordable to the masses? Cause Lexus can fetch that premium for being in-house,

Truth is, we'll never know, but one of us could be right or maybe neither of us can be right. It's tough to see what goes behind closed doors and how much influence does one man have. Cause while Akio Toyoda made the RCf/LC500 and signed off on the LFA, all these supposed sports car/premium cars are all Lexus and Tada is the sole savior for the toyota brand to make the car he wishes under Toyoda's supervision.

Toyota has the money to build whatever they want, when they want, and where they want. When people tell me “they are trying to do what makes the most sense financially”, well then why on earth earth did they build an LFA that made zero profit (yes zero) and was actually a loss for the company? How about the millions invested in RC-F or GS-F?? Who’s buying those horrendous frankenstien mobiles?? It seems like there is a major problem at Toyota...I believe it’s the idiots in upper management they are bringing in who have no clue what we (the true loyalists and fans) want. The previous Supra’s were so great because they had genuine Toyota folks engineering and researching them. The new crowd at Toyota is a like the united nations all with different ideas and visions, disagreeing with each other until someone says, “lets just put a piece of everything in it so everyone will shut up and be happy.” BAM! MKV Supra! The biggest reason this car is and will continue to be a failure is because it is not Japanese! Guff once said in one of his videos, that the FT-1 was “distinctly Japanese”....and while I agree with him on the idea of FT-1, the MKV Supra is distinctly German. Toyota keeps fucken up, I don’t know why. They wanted to resurrect the AE86 which was a Toyota, but decided to label it a Scion and call it an FR-S??? Lmao! You idiots, the whole point of the car was to resurrect the the AE86 name, so not only did you not put a Toyota inline four in it, but you called it a Scion FRS, only to re-name it a GT-86. You wonder why Scion collapsed?? Anyways....my fingers hurt from typing :coffee:.

Lexus had made it clear that they are a separate entity from Toyota.

Lexus is a Toyota, but Lexus doesnt acknowledge that it is because it sees itself as a premium upper class echelon.
I guess what Lexus is trying to do is build a image report.

Anyways, just wait until you see the S-Fr. Most likely it will be a co-partnership with Mazda (New Miata) as Toyota had taken a share of Mazda (like 5%). But, what makes me believe it not is that Mazda partnered with the Fiat 124.

Toyota, the car manufacturer that sluts it's sports cars to others :)
