Buying 2024 3.0 Premium Deciding Between AT/MT

I currently own NB Miata and the moment I turn the AC on in this car it completely ruins the driving experience. No torque, choppy throttle, abysmal to shift. All around terrible experience. I was wondering if this is just an issue with all manuals or an issue with low power manuals?. I would rather get an AT Supra if I am going to have to change the way I drive the car every time I turn AC on.

This annoyed the hell out of me in my Miata’s as well (NC2, NC3, ND, ND2). I also noticed it in my Golf R. Though I’m at altitude so that isn’t helping any 4 cylinder that’s off boost.

I’m curious to hear what MT Supra owners have to say. Haven’t driven one yet myself.

I have the manual 2023 supra and there's no noticeable change with and without the A/C. Also I would 100% recommend this manual its by far the best I've ever driven. Full disclosure I've only driven a 2003 accord, 1994 F-250, and a 1970 Landcruiser but its still a fantastic manual.

I would hate to not go for MT it makes even the slowest cars a blast to drive. I'm really happy to know it doesn't change anything on larger engines. I figured it was just because the Miata is a low power 4 cylinder.

I've been a proponent of manuals for many many years and have always had one in the garage. The Supra is my first automatic performance car and the transmission in it is phenomenal. It shifts faster than I could and I have the option to use manual mode if I want to be in control of gear changes.

I honestly don't think the manual would have made the car better in my opinion. Plus it does farts on high rpm gear changes like a Porsche pdk ?

I want to test drive an AT Supra for sure!. I have heard great things and they hold power well. Definitely not completely opposed to it.

Drive both and pick what suits you best. People that shame someone for picking an auto over a manual have mental problems. Why care what someone else chooses to drive?

I’ve always owned manuals since I was 16 (39 now). Literally never owned an auto trans vehicle of any kind before the Supra, the only ones I’ve driven have been family cars and rentals. I hated all of them and vowed I would never own an auto. If there had been an MT Supra in 2021 I wouldn’t have even considered the auto.

But there wasn’t, so I test drove the shit out of the AT and then bought it. After 2 years I can confidently say that if my Supra was totaled tomorrow and I had to buy a new one, I would get the AT again, it’s that good. Meanwhile, all my other cars will continue to be MT only because I don’t trust any other autos to not be complete dog shit.

Someone please correct me if I’m wrong but I think our A/C system works differently. It’s not the traditional “sap engine power” type so that’s a non-issue for the Supra. Because it doesn’t work off the engine like they usually do is the reason we can have that convenience thingy on the app that allows our A/C to turn on at a scheduled time so it’s not an oven when get in the car.

I will second, third, fourth etc what everyone else has said on here. Both transmissions are fantastic and you should drive both before picking one because the ZF 8 speed is a fantastic auto and the only one that is better in my opinion is Porsche's PDK. But I am and always have preferred my cars to be manuals as I think they are more fun to drive for me personally. My MT is one of the best manuals I have ever driven and that is not me being biased due to owning one. It is just the god damn truth. Shifts are notchy, throws are short, clutch uptake, travel and grab are perfect in my opinion. I also live at altitude in Denver and drive with my A/C at the lowest temp available of 60 degrees at full blast and have not noticed any loss of power. I even like to drive with the windows down and A/C on full blast because I like the cool air but want to hear all the cool noises the turbo, intake and exhaust make.

I just did a search to try to find out if it’s still belt driven, and it supposedly is. So in theory it could still sap power, but maybe it’s more efficient somehow so it’s not really noticeable.

I think that just turns on the fans, not so much the AC.

I had a manual 2005 is300 that I daily drove for 9 years and then switched to a 2021 Mazda 3 turbo hatch.. had that for 3 years and it was a great car very quick but always missing that “something “ else. Never realized how much I missed driving a manual with the Supra. I test drove the automatic when it first came out and it’s an amazing transmission. I’d say try and test drive both. If you can the easiest way to test drive any car was through carmax. That’s where I actually was able to test drive the 2020 Supra.
