Good questions, the same can be asked of custom tunes as well, is the tuner adding more boost? Is he playing with timing at all?

I could tell you that smoothness of a graph says a lot, as you can see they compare it to an actual custom tune.

Custom tunes are not the end all be all, some tomes ots maps get it right. If you tune 1 supra you have a custom map for that supra, if you tune 100 supras you can start seeing a law of averages where a certain threshold will work for 98% of people.

Is custom better then ots? Always. Is it always worth the extra coin to get 20 extra whp? Well that depends.
Graph smoothing could be applied. It will just display less data and remove all the jitters.

I'm not knocking on OTS maps. I'm just saying. Custom tune will run a few revisions, back and forth, you'll see the data, adjust accordingly, log, readjust, relog. Some of us have gone to great lengths to get that damn ECU's unlocked. Another few hundred to get the car optimized is worth it.

P.S. As you log you'll see what your tuner has adjusted, ask them questions, see the changes live. So you'll know exactly how the extra power or better drivability was obtained.

Power curves on dyno pulls are obviously done in 5th gear, WOT. There is a lot more to a street tune than the shape of your curve.

I'm not talking about squeezing out more power, or whatever, but every car really is different.

Yes, 100% there is a law of averages that apply to every car. I'm not saying OTS tunes are bad, or they'll kill your shit, or whatever, though they can. But when you're spending the money, why not just spend it right.

If all you ever wanna do is give the car some more pep and tune out some codes: BM3. BM3 is really good at this, actually. The app is user friendly, the pre-made tune maps are fine and the initial setup is very easy for the user.

HOWEVER: If you have even an inkling that you'll want more advanced capabilities in the future, such as a bigger turbo, ethanol fuel, more fuel, then I think Ecutek is a better choice. Not because BM3 can't do these things, but because Ecutek is more robust and better known amongst tuners. It's a big sunk cost to change tuning platforms, so if you can EVER imagine yourself building to bigger power levels, just go right to Ecutek.

Running OTS rn should I be worried or monitor something?
You can also send the logs to BM3 support or MHD. I've harassed Halim many times at PTF. They can always make suggestions to you to run a lower octane map or make small tweaks, if you don't know what you're looking for.

Thanks everyone for giving me their thoughts!
So first I have to start with a bench unlock, I'm from Canada (Calgary specifically) and I'm not to sure if any Canadians have been doing bench unlocks for our DME's as I've only seen services in the states. From what you've guys have told me I think BM3 or MHD is in my mind since I know I wont be going big turbo or flex fuel on this car so no "need" for ECUTek. As in bm3 or MHD do they have an app like ecutek where like you can change different parameters like burble adjustment and stuff like that on the fly? And for Bm3 would a custom tune be by dyno or an online street tune sending datalogs and other stuff, and who are the good tuners for bm3 here? All I'm looking for is a good user friendly option that will do what my needs "reliably" and not be a big headache down the line

Canadian here. But I had to send my ecu over to femto. Is your 2021 one of those unicorn 2021's that only needs a bench unlock?

Yeah mine is a 2021 special, the ecu is dated 20 - 2 - 20 which unless I'm mentally slow is Feb 20 , 2020. Which now I know I need to get a bench unlock but I kinda don't really want to send it to the states

I think at this point BM3 is looking the best for me, if I understood everything correctly its user friendly, the OTS tunes are alright until when I 100% will get a custom tune via dyno or online street tuning, has cool gimmicks like map switching, anti lag etc. , and is somewhat affordable and I think has an App for it I would just need to buy their WIFI OBD2 port adapter thing? (please correct me if I'm wrong!). I guess the hardest part now is where to get my DME bench unlocked, and that brings up another question. Are all Bench unlocks the same or would I need to lets say avoid a bench unlock for ECUTek license and get a bench unlock specifically for bm3?

Thanks,

You've got it!

You can remote bench unlock with Visconti. Or you can send it to a billion different places in thee US that can do it for you. You can just send the ECU.

I keep going on a loop but, so without any of the wifi adapter and app stuff, all I need would be a laptop, their software installed, an ENET cable and flash the license to the car. If map switching is through the steering wheel controls am I flashing every OTS map to the car and it switches between the 4 maps on the steering wheel or like whenever I would need to switch maps I would need to reflash again? Then what would I need the wifi adapter for? I'm a bit confused on that
Thanks

I strongly suggest a laptop and wired cable. I'm sure the WiFi stuff works great but i'll never take that risk again. A phone is a phone, and I don't trust it when it comes to flashing.

Ok, so basically I get the cable, my laptop, download their software then flash it to the car (after I get my DME bench/remote unlocked) and lets say the OTS maps are stage 1 91, stage 2 93, stage 2 e30, stage 2 e50, they are all flashed to the car and I can select them already through the steering wheel controls? Or do I have to manually use the laptop method to flash the different tunes everytime I want to switch? (this was the process for my Honda's so thats why Im a bit confused)

You can do it via phone with a cable, you don't need to use WiFi.

I've flashed mine via my phone and WiFi 30+ times at this point with zero issues but I get that it just takes once to make you feel uneasy.
