I tried searching but couldn't find any answers/thread. As the title stated, should I get a paint correction before ppf? I'm looking for advice and ideas before my supra gets here from the dealership. My plan is to drive straight to the shop and have it ppf before I get to enjoy the car. Do brand new cars need paint correction? Or can I just have them clean the car and ppf?

100% get the paint as perfect as possible, also call the ppf shop and ask if they can also 'correct' the paint when you drop it off; what color are you getting?

Yes, it must be corrected before PPF. Most installers won't even do the PPF without correction. And even a factory fresh car is gonna need it.

Thanks for the heads up. I'm still very new to this ppf and paint correction 😅

I ended up doing both... paint corrected prior to the full car ppf and then after. Some don't realize you can polish the ppf but you can.... adding even more clarity.

I've never seen a silver finish shine so much.

Damn! Thanks for sharing a picture. I'm pretty hype since I've always wanted a supra. Can't wait to get mine and get it done right.

As others said, correct as much as possible. also, ask ppf people if you need to wait for paint correction to be cured and follow their instruction. if it's not cured correctly, it may peel off. just for reference, full panel paint curing time is 3 weeks minimum.

Why does correction and polishing of paint need curing? I think you are thinking of ceramic coating.

nibble might be thinking paint correction means touchup work, which technically it could include I suppose.

Interestingly PPF itself has a "cure" time of sorts. Usually at least a week before you wash it. Which means a week before any coating should happen (unless you coat unwashed cars like a maniac).

I feel obligated to share. Paint correction is done when there are imperfections. Some new cars suffer from fixes done at the factory and from PDI. Other new cars may be largely defect free. An honest shop won’t charge for a full correction if it’s not needed.

There’s no cure time involved after correcting the paint. They are basically removing tiny layers of clear coat to get the surface smooth. If it’s stealth or opaque ppf, micro scratches are not really going to be visible.

Some coatings can be applied lightly with a polisher.

PPF cure time is for adhesion not any other reason unless they also apply a coating on top.

My PPF/detailer guy didn't need to do any corrections on my car before full frontal PPF, as I had it dropped off with like 100 miles.

Maybe you can barely see some "orange-peel" at certain angles and lighting, but no micro scratches that I could find with lights.

Full car was ceramic coated as well.

exactly... my detailer is very trustworthy and he told me it wasn't needed in this case. Saved me a ton of money! ~1k+

The toyota dealership where I put my reservation said they wont be washing the supra at all because they don't want to put scratches in the paint. They usually leave it to the buyer to wash it unless the buyer request them to clean it. My plan is to drop it off for ppf as soon as I get it out of the dealership. That way I can really enjoy the car with an ease of mind. I wanted to do stage 1 paint correction at the very minimum to make the car as nice as possible too but I will have to talk to the shops about it some more.

A one-step paint correction (polish) should be enough for a new car.

You want to be very careful with clearbra on aftermarket paint. Some paints I've seen peel off with the clearbra during removal. Clearbra is a wear item and needs to be replaced after a couple of years usually.. unless it's garaged most of the time away from UV.. even so, they discolor after about 5yrs use especially noticeable on lighter color cars. My silver car has 8 yr old clearbra and looks fine so far, but could not say the same on my white car and was replaced.
