The TLDR version.. Don’t be afraid to do It yourself, you will save over $700 and a few days time.Total cost 941.88. I threw this on FB and someone suggested I add it here also.

So like everyone else I was skeptical about sending my DME to FEMTO myself, but my cheapness took over. I made an account on the femto website orders.femtoevo.com, and followed the instructions on the FAQs.

STEP 1 Create the account and order. Choose what service you want , for me it was Regular Unlock Supra 600 Euros. Select which Tuning software you are going to use, for most of us its going to be BM3 or MHD+. For me it was MHD+ and add to basket. Add your VIN and it will automatically fill the rest out and and again select add to basket. I would then recommend to include return shipping. Follow the prompts and check out. You will not pay at this point, and you will be waiting for Femto to send you an invoice. You will not get anything during the weekend, so if you submit this outside of working hours in Finland, do not worry.

Step 2. Once you get the Invoice, you need to pay them via wire. Again follow the instructions in the FAQ. My Credit union couldn’t do a wire that fast, so I used a company called WISE. You can google it, and I had no issues using them. Wise sent the money, and Femto had it the following day. Once you send the funds upload the receipt from whatever service you used to your femto account.

Step 3 Package your DME and take it to your local DHL. Follow the instructions in the FAQ verbatim. The instructions are written so there are no delays with customs. This includes the stated value. If you put a higher stated value, you can have issues with customs and import fees, this is why they wrote them the way they did. I added an apple air tag taped in between the fins of my DME for extra piece of mind. Attach a paper to your DME with your name, VIN, and what software you are requesting(MHD+, etc) wrap in bubble wrap and Pay DHL. For me from Jacksonville FL to Finland was $187.

Step 4. Watch the tracking and your air tag and wait….

I dropped off the DME at DHL in Jax at Noon on Monday June 24th. It was delivered back to my house in St Augustine Friday June 28th. I tracked it the entire way and total cost between unlock, shipping both ways, and fees for the wire transfer was 941.88. I saved 708.12 by shipping it myself over using one of the services, and I would do it again.

Just wanted to share my experience, so that others can save a few bucks and not feel that you have to use a company who most are just shipping through DHL anyway. Happy to answer any questions.

How long was your turn around time for. Start to finish or for when you shipped it out to when you got it back?
The shipping time was Monday through Friday. I started the process the previous Tuesday, paid them that Thursday.

Thank you for the post - I've been thinking of sending it myself instead of going through a shop.. Let's say there is damage to the ECU or it is lost in transit.

Does anyone know if they can be replaced?

Im sure you could buy one and have Toyota reprogram it. But it would be costly. I really wonder what any company would do that didn’t hand carry it?

The no insurance part is what has held me back, along with the shops that would likely ignore you if something goes sideways.

I know they do it because of the customs and to not have things held up but man if something happens...

My wife was making fun of me, because I was checking the air tag constantly. She said you look at that tracking more than you look at where our 17 year old is…. I was concerned like you, but people do this every day…. I’m sure someone is going to end up losing, but you the odds are low
