Oil consumption test is scheduled, will report back!
Thank you for for help everyone, including razor for the relevant posts.

Oil is essentially at minimum today, so I'll be topping it off before it heads to dealer, confirmed with them that this is ok since they will do full change anyway before installing the test seals.

My consumption test appointment is coming up, but just driving today I ran the measurement tool and received this. 1,945 miles since reading full. Sport mode driving, street only, mainly chill backroads, very rarely above 4-5k rpm

- 100% (6.6 liters) = 97mm
- 100% (iDrive max) = 97-85mm
- 75% = 84mm
- 50% = 82mm
- 25% = 81mm
- 0% (iDrive min) = 78mm (add 1 quart)
Yay, another oil discussion!!

Joke aside, I did 2 months ago an oil change, added "only" 6.4l of oil because I did not change the filter (it's done once a year at the dealership anyway).
Started the car, everything feels fine, idrive tells me level is 100% without any overfill.
By curiosity I checked on BimmerLink the level in mm, which gives me:
- 98 mm engine cold (not running)
-110 mm engine warm and after waiting about 5 min

I always considered engine hot + a little time to let the oil go down is the right way to measure, which would mean I've screwed up.

I have planned to remove some oil but already drove about 1000km (600 miles) including 2 trackdays, never had any warning or oil temperature issues despite a 35°C (95°F) trackday, no smoke at the exhaust (but I have a particulate filter).

So I have a few questions for the community:
-How much oil to guys fill in reality?
-Can I fill engine oil using following the BimmerLink level in mm "live", instead of starting the engine and having to wait for the oil to be hot? Any idea what kind of sensor it is(Floating, pressure, optic)?
-Without dipstick, any idea how to remove 0,3-0,4l of oil without making a flush?

When any oil change is done on any vehicle not all of the oil is going to drain out. Plus, if you’re using ramps on this car instead of lifting the car level even less is draining out. So putting in the full amount is always going to over fill it to some degree. I use 6.5 qts when doing an oil change which is ~0.4 qts less than listed capacity and have never had any reading other than full for the entire year. What the raw mm level is during the year I don’t know, never had a reason to look. Looking at it in terms of liters I would do only 6, drive it for a little while (couple days, a week, whatever) and measure it. Easy to add more, difficult to remove some.

Oil consumption test is underway, 250/1000 miles done. Needed a quart after 850 miles last go around. Delayed getting the test done because I was going to sell the car

I sent you this as a message, but once I consolidated it, I figured I might as well put it down for posterity, in case anyone was curious.

I posted 08/12/2024:
The Supra has always used oil. I put in a liter every 3,000 miles for 25k miles. I let Toyota know, they said that was within tolerance. I was fine with it, a minor inconvenience. Then a liter only lasted 2k miles. I topped it off and took it to the dealer. They checked all around, didn’t see any leaks and asked me not to add oil and to drive it in next time the low oil light came on. I told them I thought it was probably a really bad idea to drive the car with low oil, so here she is, getting towed, 1019 miles later, asking for more oil.

After getting towed in 08/12/2024 they Told me they were going to start an official oil consumption test. I was pretty annoyed, because I assumed last time I towed it in they were tracking it. They changed the oil and added various tamper seals.

I drove it a lot, because I've been concerned about the oil issue since I bought the car new. If there was a warranty issue with the car, I wanted it fixed before I voided the warranty with mods.

I posted 09/15/2024:
My 2021 went in for the conclusion to my oil consumption test Saturday. The display on the dash was reading 75% after ~1150 miles. From what I have read the car needs to lose almost a full quart before it shows any loss on the display.
The oil depth sensor should read 97mm on full after an oil change and 84-83mm for 75%.
When my service advisor called she said that the tech had checked the oil level (on the highly precise and accurate dash display), added 300ml, and then it then read 100%, so the tech decided I lost 300ml of oil.
I’m pretty frustrated because this clearly doesn’t indicate the actual amount lost. I told them I couldn’t pick it up Saturday, so I’m going to try and reach out to Toyota corporate tomorrow.
Anyone have any suggestions on how to navigate this? I was going to suggest we start a new oil consumption test at the current level, since they’re ok with calling it “full”.
They agreed that since the oil was full they would put the tamper seals back on and start another oil consumption test. I picked the car up 09/17/2024 and on my THIRD "oil consumption test", I decided to just get it done as soon as possible. I drove from Vancouver, WA to Seattle, up all the curvy roads, up to Mt. St. Helens, and finished my oil consumption test in three days. On September 20th the car asked for 2 Liters of oil after 949.6 miles. They finally acknowledged my oil consumption was abnormal. They told me they were going to open up the block and replace the rings.

I got a call a couple days later that they had to order some specific tools and parts, and I should expect them to be in "on the fourth". I went by the dealer on October 1st, to get something out of the car. My service advisor at this point says "oh, by the way, I told you the fourth, I double checked, and it's actually November 4th."

I called November 4th. They told me the parts weren't in yet.
11/22/2021 I called to check status, the tech had mostly pulled my engine, then realized they needed a b58 engine stand.
11/29/2021 I was told the engine was being reassembled, and the car should be ready for pickup 12/04-12/05
12/05/2021 I called to check status. The service advisor called me back and informed me of the following, from my post here today:
They replaced 6 piston assemblies, the water pump, the oil pump, and a ton of seals/gaskets.

I was expecting the battery to die, because I didn't think the dealer would maintain it while it was sitting for three months, but they said the car "started right up and was running fine". Then, according to my service advisor "somehow, the car got shut off". When they went to start it again, "it wouldn't start and got a low voltage error". They've ordered a new battery; it's supposed to be in today.

I found the phrasing "somehow the car got shut off" suspect, because it implies it wasn't deliberate. I also thought it was suspicious that the battery was able to start the car exactly once. I've been told the tech checked all the connections and is confident it's the battery.

So, Yeah, the process so far hasn't been fun. A full 10% of the miles on my car were driven for oil consumption tests. My dealership seems particularly inexperienced and inept at Supra service, as evidenced by the fact that they had to order tools to pull the head and a stand for the engine. I had someone reply to one of my posts and say his dealership got his piston assemblies replaced in a week. I'll let you know if they actually let me pick up the car today, but I don't think it's very likely.

I hope your experience is more positive.

My car has never asked for oil. I do track it & change it more often. I also use thicker XCess 5w-40. Regardless, sorry to hear you’ve had such an ordeal. Maybe you can lemon ? law it and get another?

It was just over three years when I got them to finally acknowledge the issue. It’s not covered by the Lemon law here anymore.

Small update: picked it up yesterday, everything seemed good except for the A/C blowing warm air. Dropped it off again this morning.

I don’t really want to say, because they’re trying to make it right. If you’re really worried about it and live in the PNW shoot me a DM with your local dealer.

So after I brought it in this morning with no A/C, they told me the o-rings were leaking, and it would take 3 business days to get new o-rings. They told me I could drive the car and I was welcome to take it and drive it until the parts showed up.

I thought I read on here that the A/C compressor is always engaged and it was bad to run it without coolant. Is this another Toyota Teachable Moment?

I’m in the Seattle area and know all the dealerships pretty well. I’ve had friends and family work at a few of them so I know behind the scenes info. If Swickard or Rodland did the work trade that car in immediately. It will save you years of headaches to come.

Its amazing how this oil consumption issue is so hit and miss. I never had a consumption issue on my 2020. Even when i drove from redmond wa to long island ny, 3000 miles over 4 days the oil level remained pegged right where it was supposed to be.

My 2021 burns some oil, if I drive it hard with e50. I burn about 2/3 quart every 3K miles. When I drive in comfort mode only without ethanol it burns about 1/4 quart every 3000 miles.

My V6 Tacoma with 120K miles burns 1/2 quart every 4K miles and its been the most reliable truck I’ve owned in 12 years. Burning some oil doesn’t necessarily mean you have a bad car.

These Supras do have oil blow-by. Whether you will see it or not on the digital dip stick is a different story.

I was totally fine with it when I was getting almost 4k out of a liter, but around 27k miles it started getting worse pretty quickly.
