I would love a plaid as a DD. My current electric DD is boring and on the slower side (a hair faster than a base model 3). If I could at least get some insane acceleration out of it, that would be awesome. Maybe once I sell a few of my cars and plaid prices go down, I’ll get one.

Yeah. I tested a Lucid. Is a nice concept car. Their revenue is negative by billions. Every car they sold, they sold at a staggering loss of hundreds of thousands invested in R&D.

beyond they fact that is a failed company, like Fisker (they had the most beautiful prototype ever built for an electric car), they have no supercharging infrastructure. Tesla’s is the best charging infrastructure for travel. No other gets close.
I've seen many Lucids in my area. My guess is that the owners charge in their garages. And most manufacturers of EVs are losing money. I just read that VW? is investing in Rivian while it, too is bleeding cash.
But you can't deny that the Lucid Sapphire is faster, more luxurious, and better handling that the Model S Plaid. The auto reviewer in the Wall Street Journal, Dan Neil, said this:

Lucid Motors—a California-based, Saudi-backed luxury-electric automaker, with manufacturing in Arizona—began production of the Air sedan in late 2021. The four-door, five-seater is available in four specifications, with four battery sizes and one to three motors. The Air Pure starts at $69,900 and advertises 420 miles of range, quick charging and a non-trivial 430 hp. The Grand Touring ($110,900) claims a whopping 512 miles of range, 819 hp and a recharge rate equivalent to 200 miles of range in 12 minutes.

But our car—the triple-motored, 1,234-hp Sapphire—is God’s flyswatter. Testing on a prepared dragstrip earlier this year, Car and Driver extracted a 0-60 mph acceleration of 1.9 seconds, which noses out the Tesla Model S Plaid for the title of world’s quickest production sedan. Subsequent figures of merit include the Sapphire’s NHRA-worthy 9.3-second elapsed time in the quarter-mile and a trap speed of 153 mph.

As you swing wide the big driver’s door, you will see the finely detailed, triple-layered dash console floating with a pool of indirect light. Spanning two-thirds of the leather-wrapped console, the 34-inch widescreen display can merge and mingle driver-centric graphics and readouts, while the center-stack touch screen handles housekeeping matters such as climate, seat controls and drive mode selection. Please, Professor, don’t touch that.

In a market full of look-alike, work-alike UX systems dating from who knows, the Lucid’s graphical interface leaps out as being the easiest and most intuitive, with smart, clear graphics and traffic visualization. While most business is conducted through the car’s central touch screens, The Lucid’s ergonomics show an effort to maintain a humanity that arch rival Teslas have been purged of, by way of dark Vulcan rituals.

I rise again to nominate the Sapphire as a modern design masterpiece, inasmuch as this deeply satisfying and compelling form also registers the lowest aero drag (0.197 Cd) of any production car. As Mercedes-Benz learned with the EQS series, the search for efficiency can take some ugly turns.

You don’t need to be Einstein to see that.
There is a new king on the road and it aint made by Tesla.

As much as I hate Testies.. Tesla will always unfortunately be the king and dominant of Ev's.

Heck, Nissan is going under and possibly getting saved by Honda. A car brand that's been around for ages. Mclaren got saved by Saudi's.

Whos going to save a brand new car company Lucid? When they're so many other ev brands coming out by the day.

As mentioned in the WSJ review (partially shown above) of Lucid, they are backed by the Saudis.

Another Plaid daily driver here. Definitely agree with all what was previously said by other Plaid owners.

The instant power/torque is amazing and just a whole different beast than my previous 1250whp GTR. Also you don’t have to warm the car up to go WOT. The traction is probably more impressive. Quality is trash if you’re coming from something like a Porsche but you’re paying for the tech.

I bought the car for the power and full self driving, not necessarily for being an EV. After owning an EV I couldn’t go back to ICE for a daily. But I for sure will always have a manual ICE in the stable for weekends/track.

I’ve ridden in two local buddies model S plaids. Absolutely incredible!

But for $47,490 including the $7500 tax incentive, the Tesla Model 3 performance is an incredible bank for the 0-2.9 second buck! My daughter‘s fiancé recently got one. Holy shit was I impressed how much these things have improved. The interior felt way beyond its pay grade. Tesla charging stations are everywhere and the most reliable. Also, it’s one of the lightest EVs out there, about the same as a M2 or M3. There are more aftermarket companies making track parts for it, such as wheels (like Apex), brake kits, coilovers and other track goodies. Why this particular model isn’t being talked about more, I have no idea. Politics, not liking Elon, publishing companies with their minds made up or other motives??? But if any of you can actually get in one of these, do it!

I could easily see my wife in one. It would fit in quite nice with our other ICE (cars).

Heartwarming. This story is an absolute if I ever heard one but it supports your point, so go you. ?
I’m with you and MasterFuz that not all older heavy cars are bad. After 2012 the safety standards got way better over here. But Jeep, oh hell with the N.O. Most kids will either leave their parents or not drive if they bought them a 2013 minivan or SUV. Which is actually a good idea, come to think of it. They‘ll decide to move out sooner and you’ve got no guilt for their safety ? Win-Win!

My buddy in high school drove a 77 Beetle and got in a pretty bad wreck when he was 16. He was turning left at an intersection, light turned yellow, and he assumed he could go because oncoming traffic would stop. A truck plowed into him and he smashed his face into the steering wheel. Had to have his jaw wired shut for 6 weeks.

His parents swung completely in the opposite direction with his next car and bought him a 1990 Jeep Wagoneer. It only had like 3 safety features: driver side seat belts, passenger side seat belts, and it was slow AF. He ended up plowing that one into a parked sedan because the roads were snowy and it had shit tires and no antilock brakes.

Meanwhile, his mom and dad drove three 80s BMWs. The mom didn't care for them at all, but because the dad loved them too much to consider any other car, she was stuck with it. And they had 3 because one was constantly in the shop for something. A very strange dad with very odd priorities.

This is a fun thread. I have driven a Plaid via a Turo rental. It is a pretty amazing car that can be driven daily. Very impressive speed and I like all the tech. I currently have a 24' manual Supra and a 23' Polestar 2 Performance EV. Love my MKV, but if you are able to have a second car, EV is the best daily driver in my opinion. Especially if you can charge at home.

I'm curious...Would you be okay with an all-in-one desktop computer with no mechanical keyboard for daily use?:dunno:

HI there. No I wouldn't, but that's because I am almost constantly typing when on my computer and I type much faster on a traditional keyboard. Not sure of the intent of the question, but maybe you are referring to touch screen in cars? If so, it doesn't bother me too much. Most of the things can be voice activated anyway and both my cars have buttons on the steering wheel that are pretty good. The touch screens in cars are just a bit different but not necessarily worse in my opinion. I tend to embrace new technology; however, my Supra is stick. More Fun!

You are correct in that the most productive computer has tactile "controls" such as a mechanical keyboard and mouse. MCAD designers of 3D objects and assemblies often use specialized mouse-replacements. You CAN speak to Microsoft's Word program, but the percentage of those who do so is very small.

Tesla owners become accustomed to a vertical touchscreen and voice commands, but most experts agree that tactile-feel controls are safer.

But getting back to your Supra...If all you needed to do is go to work and back, in addition to going to a gym or grocery store, why wouldn't you prefer to daily your Supra?
I guess my opinion has always been that life is too short for daily vehicles that are not lots of fun.
One of the fun ingredients for me is sound and its mechanical symphony of engine and exhaust.
But hey, to each his own, as the saying goes.

Ya fair points there. I do drive the Supra to work sometimes too. It has other challenges of just having 2 seats and not being great for transporting larger purchases, but it is still a great daily as well. My wife also drives the Polestar from time to time, so I have another need. I do love my Supra and all, but never having to go to the gas station is pretty nice (I hate buying gas). As I said above, if you can have 2 cars, EVs are best daily. I would not say that about owning just 1 car due to the infrastructure not quite being there yet. Then there is the preference and I have owned a manual car since I started driving 20+ years ago. But to your fun comment, the 23' Polestar 2 Performance is pretty fun as well. It is 12.2 quarter mile car and pulls hard and its got good suspension and big Brembo brakes. A heavy car and nothing like the Supra, but I am still enjoying that one too!

Noticed you have a Miata as well. Respect there. My first sports car was a NB. Wish I never got rid of that thing. Mine was heavily modded and had role bars and everything..lol. Nice Mix of Supra and NC you have there.
