Ok... hear me out.

The Supra is a 2 door sports car with 335hp/365ft.lb.tq that does 0-60 in 4.1 seconds. It has a heads-up display, Apple CarPlay, JBL audio and Drivers Assistance. It gets 26mpg. It will cost $49-55k and will be available sometime this summer.

The Model 3 (let's talk about the Performance model) is a 4 door family sedan with an electric motor that makes it go 0-60 in 3.2 seconds. It has a 15" screen, no Apple CarPlay, but a monster stereo and, of course, Autopilot. It goes ~300 mi on a charge. It costs $59k before tax incentives and "gas savings" and is available now.

The Model 3 Performance, especially with Track Mode, has done very well in handling tests from multiple journalists. It has proven to be a capable track car unlike many electric cars before it. It has done quite well in tests against the likes of the BMW M3, even. It is slightly more expensive but you can have the non-Performance which still does 0-60 in 4.5 seconds for even less than the Supra (and a true RWD version for even less than that). Finally, you have a car that has three extra seats, one extra trunk, drives itself and is future proofed.

I am eagerly awaiting first drive reviews of the Supra to see how much better it drives (and, obviously, sounds) than something like the Model 3. My wife keeps telling me she would appreciate the back seats to fit a car seat but... eh...

Any thoughts on this odd-ball comparison?

It is not 59k, it is 64.5k if you add autopilot. Also, the quality on most of the 3's I have seen is pretty horrendous, not to mention the fact that the 300 mpg is on a good day only. I personally really like the Model S, and understand that 300 is way more than necessary for daily commutes. However, the 3 will never handle as well as the Supra, and I doubt it would keep up at higher speeds.

I have a Model 3 and an S2000 and used to regularly track my S2000. I'm looking to replace the S2000 with the A90 and am also considering a second performance model 3 -- and I think I've decided against the P3D. Comes down to two negatives:

- I've even replaced the drive unit on the Model 3 at 12,000 mi along with a number of other more minor problems.
- There isn't much you can do about voltage drop in cells. You're only ever going to get maximum power from low 90 to 100% state of charge. Dynos out there have shown the relation between state of charge and horsepower and the reduction in power is drastic at lower SoC. This completely rules it out in terms of a car you'd want to bring to the track even if it has track mode even if you have a charging option there.

The model 3 is a 50k car with the interior of a 22k car. At 35k (which is actually available after incentives in my state) its a great car. But it's not a supra competitor in any way(handling, looks, sportiness or usefulness as a family car) If your wife wants a back seat and you don't have another car, I think this car is probably not a good buy.

It's an odd comparison at first sight, but if you take a look at results of some SCCA ProSolo autox events, the Model 3 has been killing it beating M2s and 981 Cayman S....lol.

Why compare the Supra to Model 3? I think it would be complicated to compare a gas car to a pure electric car. But, well, when it comes to performance figures, I believe the Model 3 will be more powerful to drive; but the Supra will be more fun to drive overall. The Supra will cater to those who would just like to drive around winding roads, on the track, go to grocery, etc. as long as theyā€™re good to add strictly just one passenger beside them. Besides, for those who would like to bring the whole family with them, Tesla Model 3 will be the better buy. In my case, Iā€™d go with the Toyota Supra anytime any day. Just waiting a bit for more surprises... hopefully they release a manual version soon... then thatā€™s the time Iā€™d go full throttle!:drive:

Why compare the Supra to Model 3?
Cuz I got 50k to spend. They both are 50k and I can only afford one. I am having a hard time choosing between a yellow base model supra and a black model 3. I liked that someone else was thinking just like me. I still haven't fully decided, but I can say the Tesla Buying Process where you just build to order is miles ahead of begging dealers to get a specific option and color.

To update this thread the Model 3 is now priced at 39k, 49k, and 59k, for the standard, extended range dual motor, and performance tiers. This includes autopilot. 6k option for Full Self Driving.

Well, for me, itā€™s really hard to choose from this standpoint. Different cars cater to different audiences; and theyā€™re of different categories. The Supra primarily caters to enthusiasts who want to bring their car to the track, as well as enjoy it on the road; more on having pleasurable drive(alone or having just one companion) and wanting to hear that engine sound that excites, whereas the Model 3 caters to those who are environment conscious, who want a preview of what future cars will drive and feel like, and is more family-oriented. Reliability wise, itā€™s also hard to tell since both are still very new.

In my opinion, at this point in time, I see both of the cars are good. Driving electric with the Tesla Model 3, you care about the environment, definitely is a good fit for the family. You get to save a lot in terms of re-fueling as electricity is cheaper than gas. What hurts is when itā€™s time to replace the battery pack. I heard itā€™s pretty expensive. Recharging is also slow, as of the moment, compared to refueling your gas car that takes just a few minutes to do so. Owning an electric car, you also have less to worry as there will be less maintenance. No oil changes, no gasket issues, no transmission fluid, coolant changes, no replacement of belts, etc. As of the moment, I would choose this over the Toyota Supra. I would only choose to get the Supra if it will be made available with a manual transmission gearbox. You canā€™t go wrong with the auto gearbox of the Supra. Itā€™ll b fun to drive for sure. But thereā€™s really nothing that can replace the fun, joy, and excitement behind the wheel driving a car with manual transmission. So as of the moment, Iā€™m still patiently waiting...

Prices were just lowered today on the Model 3:

$38,990 Standard 0-60 5.3 Secs
$47,990 Long Range Dual Motor 0-60 4.4 Secs
$54,990 Performance 0-60 3.2 Secs

"bring their car to the track, as well as enjoy it on the road" A performance model 3 will smoke a supra on and off the track.

For me the Supra caters to those who like to customize and tweak their car, either through a 3rd party or by themselves OR feel good when the exhaust ramps up and pops and crackles.

If comparing the new Toyota Supra to the Tesla Model 3, why not just wait for Porscheā€™s 1st all-electric Taycan, which will be unveiled on September 4th. Just a month away.

The Taycan will likely start at $90k+, whereas the highest performing model 3 is $54,990. Admittedly, I have struggled with this comparison as well, even though they differ quite a bit. Instant torque is no joke. Handling, however, is likely not up to par with the Supra's.

My AWD Performance Model 3 daily driver has been making my performance cars "less fun." Hard to explain unless you have driven these, but even a 700 hp Trans Am conversion feels lumbering and slow compared to the Model 3. (Thinking about selling TA and getting a Supra -- just wish it had the targa -- the TA has t-tops and I like the option of some open air as I had in my old Supras.)

I too made this comparison and folks were scratching their heads why. I love the Model 3 as far as practicality is concerned and I even swore I wouldn't get another ICE car. If I was driving one car alone, it wouldn't be the MKV but that's mainly because I have too many other things I have to do when I'm driving from A-to-B. Driving my Model X as a daily was actually the reason I didn't get a Model 3 for now. All of the instant torque, immediate acceleration, etc is still possible, I'm still saving a ton on electricity vs. gas, and I still get to enjoy the Supra/sports car feel for its intended purpose.

I know the Tesla family is fast, but the longer I drive, the less I feel like I have to go 0-60 in a hurry. The electronics in Tesla are of course top notch but they are certainly not the most luxurious (more minimalist; Audi/Porsche to me has nailed luxury interior). But, if you chose the Model 3 Performance Edition, I don't think you would mind as they are both great cars.

I have a Model 3 Standard Range Plus as my daily but am considering the Supra in a few years. I wouldn't necessarily compare both of them. The Model 3 is a much better daily commuter (Autopilot, EV, etc). The Supra is a pretty terrible commuter and if I could only have one car, it wouldn't be a Supra.

If you can afford to have 2 or more cars, the Supra would make a great weekend/evening car. It handles great and gives you the noise/smell of an ICE vehicle.
