Congrats on the car! Really all you need is a downpipe and tune to achieve your power goals. I would recommend MHD for tuning as their interface is great and their maps are reliable.

Hey there!

I just picked up my 2020 certified pre-owned Supra Launch Edition last Saturday and I've been in love with the car. I purchased what I thought was my dream car back in October, which was a new 2024 C8 Corvette Z51. Unfortunately, that Vette had a bad DCT right off the lot so GM bought it back under California Lemon Law. I decided to roll the dice and get into another C8 Z51 which ran fine for about 3 months before it too shat a transmission on New Years and almost stranded my Partner and I 300 + miles from home.

Well, I started looking around for a Supra about 2 months ago, and kept running into a wall with availability especially in the Bay Area. I found a new 2025 that was coming in but Roseville Toyota refused to negotiate and lied to me about not marking up the only Supra they had coming in. They wanted 10k over MSRP. I walked out and never looked back. Fast forward to last week. GM approved the buyback on my second C8 Corvette which freed me up to shopping again for a Supra. A dealership who I'd kept in contact with started blowing up my phone last Friday with a CPO'd 2020 Supra with 6000 miles on it. I jumped on it and drove 3 hours to Fresno and purchased her right there.

I got lucky, because other people had applied for financing on the car but couldn't qualify so she was mine. So far, we found out that an oil change was never done on the car since 2020 (she was a garage queen), so a Toyota dealership here in the Bay Area performed all the service on it and so far she's in tip top shape. Car threw a CEL for a small EVAP code, but we think it was because I didn't tighten the gas cap enough. Drove her for hours last night, let the car sit overnight and so far it's been flawless. One thing I will say is I am so excited to mod the car.

I'm thinking a wing, Cold Air Intake, catback exhaust either HKS or Tomei, an ECU tune, and possibly some stickier tires. For those who have had your Supra's for awhile/daily your car how is it reliability wise? I've gotten PTSD from Corvette check engine lights, so forgive me if I'm a little nervous. But the car is SUCH a drivers car. The C8 is a great platform, but it certainly deadens the feedback and almost insulates you from what the road is telling you. Lots of power, lots of nannies, but more of a quick GT car as opposed to the Supra.

Also, this car attracts a whole other crowd and I love it. So far, it's been nothing but car people and enthusiasts. Lots of thumbs up, lots of "convoy" driving randomly finding friends on the road and cruising. The car just has such an amazing feel and joy to it I can't explain. It scratches a different itch I never knew I had when I had a C8. Power goals right now are around 500 HP at the crank with a ECU tune and Mod 2 on 91 with the mods listed. Anywhere close to that I'd be happy with, and a little meatier tire.

Hope to see you all around the forums and on the road. What a car!

Oh nice! Yeah Roseville made me so mad when they lied to me about the price on the Supra. Wasted 4 hours of my time driving round trip to put a deposit on one. Glad you were able to find yours from WC.

Well a slight bummer but nothing major. The CEL came back on for the EVAP code so Dublin Toyota is sourcing the part they need to do the EVAP leak test. According to the tech it's a tiny one (0.5 mm) or less, so unfortunately the tune will have to wait. I'm miffed Blackstone Toyota certified the Supra when it hadn't even had an oil change in 5 years and then the CEL comes on... I already let my tuner know, but the good news is we're doing a build sheet all in one go.

Any recommendations on parts? So far we've determined I'll be doing a cold air intake, a downpipe (cats remain to pass smog), Catback exhaust and a stage 1 ECU tune. All in all power should be right around 500- 550 hp at the crank, and he's going to refer me to an installer for the wing.

I was thinking a Tomei catback exhaust. Any recommendations for the cold air intake and the downpipe? I got time, so I'd love to do some more research. Price isn't an issue, I want the car done right.

From what I've read in my short time on this forum the track goers say that adding an intake is kind of pointless and most cause higher IATs after multiple pulls so unless you're pushing some big numbers might be worth skipping it. The stock box should get you to your goals just fine. That being said the Armaspeed intake adds some gnarly induction and flutter noises, so I went ahead and threw one on mine and I love it. For catted downpipes I've seen a lot of praise for the Active Autowerkes Catted DP and there's a handful of Sponsors on the forum that can get you one for a good deal. MERAKI AUTOWORKS comes to mind.

Tyvm for the recommendations. Yeah I've seen videos of the Aramspeed intake and I love the noises lol. Definitely looking into the catted DP from Autowerkes.

Sounds great and thanks! You know, I just want it to sound authentic if that makes sense. I'm so used to driving V8's this car sounds refreshing with the V6 and the back burbles are addicting. I want my build to be as close to a JDM car as I can get it. The MK4 is a car of legend I grew up with in the 90's so being able to drive a MK5 and seeing what the aftermarket is like is just so fun and exciting.
Inline 6! Not v6. Welcome to the Supra gang, its such a great car and WAY more rare than a C8. AA catted downpipe, and tune and honestly it's perfect like that. Enjoy brother!

Thanks!

I also looked up the difference. You learn something new everyday LOL.

" An "inline 6" engine has all six cylinders arranged in a straight line, while a "V6" engine has two banks of three cylinders each angled to form a V-shape, making the V6 more compact and generally preferred by manufacturers due to its smaller size, while the inline 6 is known for its exceptional smoothness and balance due to its even firing order across all cylinders "

And I totally agree, it is incredibly rarer than a C8 and imo much more special.

And learning is half the battle. GI JOE!!!

I read somewhere that more C8s were produced and sold in just 2024 than every supra sold here in the states from 2020-2024 (or damn close to it)

Only the former Corvette owners who have not yet realized that stereotypical Vette owner mindsets & behavior must cease the moment the car leaves your possession. That chapter of your life is closed, so act like it.

And I'm fairly certain more that half of those will end up needing a new DCT at some point. Fun and pretty car, horrible reliability issues. It's gotten so bad that even those in denial on the C8 forum are finally waking up to serious serious problems with their DCT's. Horror stories like mine. Guys dealing with 6 months waiting on a DCT, stuff like that.

The last day I dropped off my C8, there was a poor dude with a 2020 who had it in 5 separate times, and that was AFTER the DCT was already replaced. Imagine driving a 90k USD sports car and the transmission shits out on you as soon as you get on the Freeway. Guys who I talk to on the street have their own horror stories or buddies who have horror stories. And the same DCT is in the Z06 which i why I didn't even touch one when the dealership offered to get me into one trying to make it Vette #3.
