Yes it would be a different car then what we have. It would be v6 powered (hopefully v6 TT, though maybe not turbo right away as the new LS v6 might not have been ready in time)...
"But muh inline 6 :("

- Tada-san probably

Jk, just glad we got an affordable sports car approved by Toyota.

I bought my 1995 Supra in 1999, i am a big supra fan
but come on
what Toyota car has better interior than BMW ?? akh they are okay fine
but BMW more tight and luxurious
i am totally fine with mkv size, interior engine etc
I know very well that b58 can be easily toned to reach 600 and 700hp
with all the positive mechanics in the mkv, in my experience 600hp can be much better than 900hp in old mkiv
the weight, traction, chasis, brakes, gearbox etc etc
are much better in the mkv
nearly 30 years of technology
so bottom line
mkv with wing + body kit + Turbo and other boost till 600hp will satisfy me as hell

If Toyota benchmarked the Cayman for their new Supra, why is it that the Cayman offers a manual transmission but the Supra doesnā€™t? :hmm:

its all about keeping the cost down at least in the beginning
having two diffrent manufacturing lines will slightly split the line and increase the cost for Toyota
the more customization you tell the factory, the more you pay and then the more you price it
im sure as soon as sales going well Toyota will quickly unveil Manual
its already in the testing right now as far as i know

Well, yeah, itā€™s a possibility. The Toyota Supra / BMW Z4 is a completely different story as compared to the earlier Toyota 86 / Subaru BRZ tie-up; and the Supra is expected to gain more and more variants, different variations, in the coming years.

My sentiments exactly. I have no interest in a car I can't afford. A supra thats an NSX or GRT competitor - no interest. And I bet most others who are in line to buy one also wouldn't be if it was a $75-100,000 car. And, from Toyota's perspective, they would have another poor seller, like the MKIV, which basically is the reason the Japanese sports car went away for 20 years. I went to see a Z4 yesterday - the 3.0, 4 cylinder model. it was in a local BMW dealership, MSRP was $75,000 Canadian. Corvettes base price is $65,000 - but all of them in showrooms are $75,000 or more. Caymens are $80,000 and up. The Supra premium edition is being sold for 65,000$ here. This price, for what we are getting, is unattainable in any other car. I'm grateful to Toyota for making this happen.

It would be great to see something competitive from Toyota around 550hp-650hp+ mark, manual transmission, developed in house, low volume production, and of course overbuilt (able to hold 1000hp++ on stock longblock/transmission).

You want that kind of power go American or euro, lol, Japanese donā€™t do that sort of cars, and if they did, they are 100k+

Name all the Japanese cars that have 400 hp or more? Not many, on the top of my head. Current cars would be: NSX, gtr, rcf, lc500, gsf, Q60 red. Two are sports cars, and four are luxury sports. None are cheap or ā€œattainableā€ to most.

Now you want Toyota to do a low volume car with those specs, lol, good luck!!

Itā€™s def a good dream to have, and would have been nice, but completely unrealistic now and most likely in the future as well.

A halo car such as a Supra was not "cheap or affordable to most" - that's what made it a low volume production / selling vehicle. For cheap and performance, there's a Mustang GT with 460hp. A Supra should be on a whole other level or three above that.

For reference, in '94 my TT 6sp was darn near $75k accounting for inflation. It "only" made 320hp, but that was around the same ball-park as the GT-R and NSX of the same year, if not more. Now its down 230hp+ compared to both of these modern examples, 565hp and 573hp respectively.

Iā€™ll tell you, even if peformance was comparable to a GTR, I doubt I would pay 100k+.

I think you are forgetting how the rising Yen & exchange rate played a factor into the MK4's pricing. It was cheaper in Japan, hence why Toyota sold like 3X as much of them overseas vs the US market. I don't think it was Toyota's plan to just sell so little of them in one of the largest car markets.

Toyota wanted to sell 20,000 in in the first year. That didn't work out for them though.
