I always wondered this, I know most of us don't ever intend to sell but the idea is kinda fun to think of. The Japanese cars in america at least tend to have a better resale value than German cars, but since this is a Japanese car with German guts would that hurt the resale value? Or would the brand and Japanese heritage keep the supra's value a little higher than their German counterparts

That’s dependent on the public’s perspective on the car in the next 5 years. If it kicks ass and becomes a bona fide legend, then the depreciation will likely be warded off.

The flip side is that it is as unreliable as everybody’s preconceived opinions and that the turn signals really don’t work. In that case, I think I will be seeing them on my favorite YouTube drift fail channels parked inside other cars.

I think you have a lot better chance of less depreciation getting a LE.

Resale will be VERY largely dependent on reliability and maintenance. The primary reason BMW's depreciation is absolutely abysmal is post-warranty they can quickly turn into a dumpster fire. And FWIW, the reliability stigma is what stokes much of the cynicism for this car; especially from MKIV owners/enthusiasts. This car will either be the most reliable BMW or the worst reliable Toyota, and values will follow suit; time will tell...

I wouldn't count on the LE's being immune to depreciation, particularly if/when higher level (and/or manual) models are introduced. The first MY is the most prone to defects that will get sorted in later years. I can't think if a single example whereby the premier/launch/first edition/whatever variant of any car is meaningfully more valuable relative to its later counterparts.

I believe they will hold their values well just like //M and M performance models do. But that depends on the different performance options offered later on and if the face-lift version is noticeably different.

Well is subjective. Of course they will take a hit in the first couple years but than they stagnate for a while.

Better than say a 320i or 7 series

But then again, all german cars take massive hits around 60k-80k miles

I agree with Tony. The only German car I’ve had that didn’t take a depreciation hit was the GT4.

I never said it hold it's value, just that it holds it's value well. It is a car after all, you can't expect a car to not depreciate

Ah I'm just commenting base on my experiences of past cars I owned.

But to Kona points, only a few cars hold their value "well" are Porsche.

Oh of course, they are the few cars you can most of your money out of in a couple years.

I just dont think the Supra will follow the 7 series and base 3 series stereotype of losing 50% of its value in a year and 80% after 6 years.

Scarcity will add value as well. Maybe one of the reasons why there are rumors of limited productions....
Markets are flooded with relatively newer M cars hence easier to depreciate. They also don't hold an "icon" status.
Not that we know if A90 will turn into an icon or not...
