My Manual Guys, How Are We Launching Our Cars?

this is my first manual car. i would like to use my dragy to get my 0-60, 1/8, 1/34, and 60-130 times. i seen some people say to launch, rev up to 2k RPM, then drop the clutch. Does that not shock the driveline? What is the safest way to launch the car?

I do not know what is the best way to launch the car. However, doing a rolling pull should be easier on the driveline.

Launches from a stand still will eat up your stock clutch very quickly.

Impossible to enjoy this car from a stop without a little drivetrain shock. But I wouldn't worry about that on stock power.

It's a practiced/learned skill that is highly dependent on a lot of variables: road conditions, tires, other mods... and most importantly the driver. It's a new car, you will be fine practicing on it, your goals should be to be as smooth as possible and minimize wheelspin with throttle control. No need to bang gears to be "quick", dumping the clutch is better for the clutch than burning it out (partial engagement) but harder on the diff, keep in mind these cars make massive torque early, so launching at 3k rpm will likely make wheelspin harder to control than say launching at 2 and will require less throttle modulation. But again, that is depending on conditions.

Highly recommend removing the CDV, will make shifting more consistent particularly the 1-2. Go practice on an empty road with a lot of room and you will be fine. If you want to have more mechanical sympathy just do a rollout without dumping the clutch, and practice shifting smoothly through the run. Alternatively, go to a local autocross, you will get a couple runs in, get to practice launching the car and get a better understanding on controlling the car at the limit.

I definitely do a slight slip roll out and save all my drivetrain....only loosing maybe a 0.10-0.20 of a second 60 foot time and saving my car for many runs. Clutches are designed to be replaced, differentials and transmissions are not. Plus...there is a bright side...forced upgrades with stronger clutch packs that can handle more boost!

At the track, I usually rev to 3500 and side-step the clutch. This is good for a 1.7x 60 ft on factory tires. On the street, side-stepping at 2500 works pretty well. I've out-launched automatic AWD cars with more HP on the street.

For all the hate the CDV gets, it does make launching the car easy, since it provides the perfect amount of slip.

Note, in sport mode, the factory tune changes the throttle mapping when the clutch is in vs out. So when you dump the clutch while holding a steady throttle position, the car will automatically rev-up too. So a 3500RPM launch is more like a 4500RPM one.
