Hey all, so just an update:

£1750 later, new oil pump fitted and...... I can measure oil again! ?

BUT! I have since taken apart my old pump and although it is the old version with the plastic housing... it's not broken in any way that I can see. I've attached pics below:

So yea... really strange. There was obviously an issue as it now measures oil and it didn't before but it looks like the diagnosis of a faulty plastic retainer isn't the issue in this case.

Thanks to all for the info and a special shout out to @Faye for all the information and part numbers, that helped massively.

At least I know now that my pump is good and it's the metal one! (ps: the bmw part worked)

That's about $2388 US dollars which is about right. My dealer said it would be about $2500, but luckily I got mine replaced under warranty. Zero cost to me, just didn't have the car for 2 weeks. Glad you're fixed up. Enjoy.

Nice one, did you ever find out if your housing was damaged?

I did not. The only thing the dealer said to me was there was signs of wear.... whatever that means. I did not see the original part after they swapped it.

Didn't I read that during the oil level test when the ecu elevates the engine rpm for a period of time it establishes that the oil pressure is within certain parameters and then measures the oil Qty? If this is the case then when the oil pump adjuster ring breaks/fails the oil pressure defaults to max oil pressure which is above the pressure parameter for oil level checking so you get a fail for the level test due to the oil pressure being too high.
So if the oil pressure for some other reason such as a jammed/sticking adjuster ring/ broken or weak adjuster ring spring or grossly out of the range oil viscosity might also give the same failed oil level reading due to oil pressure out of the range? It would be interesting to know what the pressure range is supposed to be during the oil level check.
