Went for a little cruise on Sunday night. Let my friend drive since we're both car people. Had rained earlier so the road was wet. He lost the back end around a turn and put us into a rock wall/cliff. My side took the impact and disintegrated the door, there was nothing there when we came to a stop. Walked away with bruised ribs and a fractured collarbone. She did a really good job protecting us. I'm devastated. This is my favorite car I've ever owned.

I'm so sorry to hear! Glad you are safe!
I am curious tho how does the insurance handle a total loss?
Considering that buying a used supra is more expensive than KBB claims...

really sorry to see -- I was just in Oahu for the last week, and saw a blue hello kitty supra, and a pink one while I was there. Glad you're ok though!

Yeah, she was stock performance wise, only had an intake, no tune. Never letting anyone drive my cars again.

I'm curious how insurance will handle it too, the adjuster is examining it today. But as far as I know, they'll pay "market value" so I'm hoping/guessing low to mid $60s.I'm also going to submit my receipts for the aftermarket stuff I had, probably 6 grand or so in various aesthetic things and tint/ceramicoated.

My buddy has agreed to pay for shipping my next car out here which.. Isn't cheap, and my insurance deductible so that's good of him. He's pretty fcked mentally about it too.

Why I don't let "friends" drive or ride my vehicles. At least it's totalled. It's a bigger issue when the "friends" damage to your car isn't so severe and then the arguments start about how much fixing is needed.
Also as you point out the "no friends drive my car" is also for the benefit of the friend as well sometimes.

Firstly, I’m glad you’re ok and alive. Secondly, what kind of a friend drives a car this recklessly? No respect at all. My own blood brothers don’t drive the piss out of my cars even if I tell them they can.

Check this guy’s horror experience with a friend driving his car.

First off, glad youre okay. My quick background, I've been in insurance for 12.5 years so I know how it works.

I am assuming you have a standard policy with collison coverage. So you'll be paid whatever the actual cash value is (I suspect below 60k depending on year and miles). And unless you purchase additional coverage (or have a policy I'm not aware of) you'll barely be paid for the aftermarket parts. Basically pennies compared to what you bought them for.

Insurance companies dont value aftermarket parts as adding value. In most cases they subtract from the value. So you get paid the most for as close to stock as the car can be (for the most part).

Good luck with the experience, I hope you have a speedy recovery and if you have any questions let me know.

Also, thank you for taking the bullet and reminding me why I've never let anyone drive any of my cars.

The only person that I allow to drive my car is my wife, she's on the insurance. Anyone else, I tell them you're not on my insurance, so you're just gonna be the passenger. Or if you really wanna drive, you can drive your own car and I'll be your passenger.

Insurance covers other people driving your car. But yes, good excuse nonetheless lol.

Not always.

As a one time thing, yes they do. Unless you claim theft and file a police report. Then any damages done by the stolen car would not be covered. But your car would still get first part coverage.

That sucks man. That crash looked really bad, but glad you're ok. This could be a good opportunity. But let me preface this by saying you’ll need to have room in your garage, the time, and the energy to take this on. Plus a motor, transmission, diff, ECU, etc. in good condition from the totaled car. The good news is that, for now, you do have free labor from your friend, so that’s a nice bonus, lol. You could try buying it back on coparts and rip out the parts that are in good condition and sell it. if the bidding war goes over 5K then forget it.

EDIT: Oh fuck me you're in hawaii... ok nvm.
