I stopped by the Toyota dealership today to see what they could do about the current Supra incentives. I asked if I could take it out for a test drive and they agreed.

Because of Covid, they handed me the key fobs and told me to go have fun by myself. If I get pulled over, it’s on me.

I was able to drive the car like I stole it and those who are familiar with the Poway area, I was able to drive to the end of Scripps Poway and then to Highland Valley Road to see how this car rips.

Unfortunately, I was not impressed at all when I brought it back.

I hit my head twice on the roofline getting in. The hood line is high and not good a view. The A pillars are very thick blocking a lot of the peripheral view. It felt like I was in a tank. The wind buffeting was annoying and the JBL sound system is a joke. The engine pulled very nicely, the paddle shifts were nice and crisp and the exhaust sound was music to my ears.

Handling wise, the steering felt very vague. The steering felt very light and the suspension wasn’t sporty at all. It didn’t feel like planted at all.

Not to brag or anything but when you drive a Porsche, it makes other sports car feel mediocre. Bummer.

you do realize that two of those complaints are easily fixed, right? The wind deflectors and flashing out the piped in engine noise to improve the
Radio. The radio actually sounds pretty decent once you do this. The visibility stuff however is something you need to figure out if it’s something you will adjust to. I did.

Yeah, I’m aware of those. Unfortunately, the cabin feel, ergos, suspension damping, handling etc will definitely take some time to get used to. I can’t justify 50K~ for now though. I wasn’t completely wow’d by the test drive.

Yeah , I figured as much. You’ve been around here long enough to know that. I know what you mean too by wanting to be wow’d by the test drive. Luckily for me that was exactly how I felt so it made it an easy decision. You, however have a very high bar coming from the P car world.

Very interesting to hear from a Porsche owner's perspective. I think the only other review I remember is from Redline reviews, when he reviewed his Cayman GTS at the Supra.

Idk if you've driven a Cayman S, but I would prefer the MKV over a Cayman. 911 is of course where the line is drawn, and where Porsche shines. Most of what you touched on about the interior is the same I felt on my test drive. The pillars, the narrow view looking out through windshield, and the heavy BMW feel inside just didn't look special. However, the driving experience is awesome and I do think the MKV is a great deal in today's arena. Just not too special as a halo car, in my opinion anyway.

You can't compare a 911 to a Supra. It's twice the price to start, before adding any options. It should be much better at that price.

I completely agree. It’s comparing apples and oranges..... Not sure why anybody would even be comparing one.

It sounds like you should stick to higher end Porsche, GTR, Lambo, Etc. Doesn’t sound like the A90 Supra is the right car for you. As some people pointed out, it’s still a Toyota.....

Agreed against a 992, it’s a completely different price point. However, in pre VW 911’s, the 997’s are a good comparison from both power and price point in the 40-60K range.

Still a Toyota? Well that’s a whole different discussion. Why a higher end Porsche? Mine is similar power and weight spec as the Supra. Sure, I’d like a GT3 RS but let’s be real.

I grew up around 70’s, 80’s, 90’s and 2000’s Toyota’s. I would have loved add another one. I appreciate all cars just as much as many here. I had a deposit on the incoming ‘09 GTR until they announced there wasn’t a manual. Wasn’t that impressed by it either.

Lambo? Well Diablos have somewhat bottomed out and are on the rise. Plus, the last gated 6 and same headlights as the Z32 300ZX’s.
