What other vehicle were you thinking of buying, if you did not buy the Supra?

A lot of really good other vehicle options listed here. It's one I'm struggling with currently. Need something with speed in my life. I've had like 25 different cars over the past 15 years or so and the last several years I haven't had a sporty vehicle. The Supra is definitely on this list of options but I'm struggling. At it's price point you can buy so many different options. I think as for new, it's hard to beat for what it offers but there's a ton of used cars that fit around that $50k price. I like a lot of different stuff, 2 doors and performance sedans.

Some options I've been entertaining but am at a loss

MK5 Supra
RS3
Golf R
CTS-V newest gen.
GTR
Jaguar F-type R
C6 ZR1
C7 Z06
C63S AMG
S4
911 (997 or 991 possibly)

One thing that constantly comes to mind when thinking about an option is depreciation. Some of these cars have a lot of depreciation that comes with them, I dont know if I can stomach that. The 911 probably makes the most sense out of all of those but they have extremely high maintenance and potential repair cost. Hmm... Options.. options..
Oh come one, your 4Runner isn't fast enough for you? Mine's a rocketship! In all seriousness, I would probably buy a GTR if depreciation is your biggest concern. To me, it seems it's likely to follow the same valuation curve as the MKIV as it is already a bonafide legend. It kinda sucks as a daily though, so take that into consideration.

Haha right!?! Yea, the 4Runner is a solid all around vehicle but definitely doesn't scratch that performance itch and my Rubicon while can climb anything doesn't either LOL.

You are absolutely right with the daily driver abilities of the GTR. One of the big negatives with them. I'm kind of looking for a solid all around performance car. I almost feel if I had a GTR I would need a 3rd vehicle as a daily and don't currently have the budget for that. I will daily my rubicon but it's not for long trips. It's lifted with large tires and such.

I see, if long trips, daily ability, depreciation, and reliability are a concern, you’d have to decide which is paramount to you as I feel like older cars are a big risk in terms of things going wrong and the new cars are inherently better to daily drive.

Yep I agree. I have to pick and choose what is more important to fit my needs currently. I had went and test drove a 18' Golf R last weekend. It was surprisingly fun and functional. I was kind of hoping for a little more power but it wasn't disappointing. Dealer didn't want to work with me on the 4runner trade so I passed for now.

I have a Golf 1.8 right now as a spare daily. I also almost bought a Golf R, decided it was too boring for what is supposed to be a fun car.

I understand that and I think reason why I'm not just completely sold on them. It's a car that you have to explain to people. They just don't stand out at all. The little seat time I had definitely felt nice and peppy, didn't wow me at all. I had a rental C63 AMG a few months ago for about a week. That definitely wowed me but then again, doesn't fit the little depreciation desire, even buying used. Those things just drop in value consistently.

I had it down between a used '10 R8 and the '20 Supra. Thought I had a R8 picked out as the pictures online looked good, but when I went to look at it in person, it was completely ratted out. In the interim time, I came across a great deal on the MKV and decided to pull the trigger on that instead.

I’m looking for a fun car to drive, good value bang for the buck. I worked my way down to the bottom of this list and am back up hovering around the Supra currently.

F-Type
Cayman
C8
Supra
Miata

Long spectrum across classes, but the more I considered fun as my primary factor it sent me down acknowledging the better value. Very much considering The new Miata (stigma and all) but their whole dealer setup is so fly-by-night, and lurking their forum where most threads end up as an argument over lack of bright colors and complaining about key fobs. So come on Toyota and flood us with the 2021’s and stop the dealers from marking them up! Hurry up before I buy a Miata!

I was seriously looking at the C8 and at the time the Supra was a distant second. The C8 was appealing from a bang for your buck perspective, but once I saw one in the metal, I fell out of love. I lurked on a Corvette forum and wow, just wow. Many threads degenerated into some sort of political argument or another and was a real turn off. So between the forum members, the stealth fighter angular styling and the fact that I probably couldn't actually buy one for a couple years I closed the door on that car.

There was a dealer about an hour from me that was listing a Downshift Blue Supra for 2K below MSRP and I got them down by 2 more thousand and that moved the Supra to the number one spot.

I haven't regretted the purchase and it's been a fun car so far.

Have you been able to narrow down what type of car you're looking for? Your list has quite a range of body styles, so maybe it could ease the decision if you are able to narrow down what you're really in the market for. I was looking at used GT-Rs, Mustang, Camaro, etc. but ended up wanting the 2 seater low-slung coupe style.

Those were in my list too, and Mercedes 300 SLC. I dismissed all but Supra for the following reasons:

F-Type - Poor reliability, horrible depreciation.
Cayman - More money than I wanted to spend. My wife was not keen on it.
C8 - A bit too big (long) for my taste. Way more expensive than Supra once you add all similar options.
Supra - Almost fell out of the list due to styling, till I saw it in person. :)
Miata - My wife's top choice... too small, hardly enough storage space, convertible is not really my thing.
MB 300 SLC - My wife's second choice... hardly enough storage space, convertible is not really my thing.

Quite the range of body styles? Yep it sure does! haha. That's my issue, I just like a lot of different cars for various reasons. I almost wish I was a Mustang guy or Corvette guy, it would sure make things easier. I believe I have narrowed down my decision making to a 2 door sports oriented car. I kept looking a sports sedans but realize that's not truly what I'm looking for next. I don't know how I missed it on my original comment to this thread but the Cayman has had my attention. If I had to take a stab at it right now, my current browsing has consisted of Caymans (2012+), 991's and Supra's. The main issue with a p car in my mind is repair and maintenance cost. They are far from affordable. I'd probably change the oil myself but local dealer wants $300 just for an oil change on a Cayman. Ugh!

I started off looking at R8s. I wanted the later S-tronic version, which meant only the V8s were in budget. I eventually decided I didn't want the hassle of an old(ish) car. The Supra was the favourite out of the obvious choices for a £50-60k sports car, i.e. M2, Z4, Cayman, Mustang.

The SS1LE was a blast to drive and the engine noises were great. M2 Comp. just didn't connect with me. Steering was too numb and the DCT was odd acting unless you were beating on it. The GT350 scared me away due to engine longevity issues.
