I likely will be one of those people lol. I most certainly would love a Lexus LS that I can just tell to go to the store, while I sit on my phone trolling people on the forums...

You're right, I am just playing devils advocate. I actually have no issues with automatic transmissions, and absolutely love the ZF8HP.

But connected autonomous driving is most definitely faster and better (if you mean easier) for driving to and from work. For a street car, it really is the best way to get around. It's far safer, far more comfortable, and a much better use of your time. And sure, while Level 5 autonomy isn't here yet, it certainly will be soon. And if manufacturers like Toyota didn't bother throwing dollars at completely inconsequential passion projects like the Supra, they most certainly could direct more funds towards making that a reality.

But yet, they continue to make cars for fun, despite the fact that it's not forward thinking or optimized. Just like the manual transmission...

I think you are over estimating how capable autonomous driving is at the moment. We are far off from safe automated driving. And furthermore I think you are under stating how much the Supra makes financial sense. They aren't just making the car for "fun". Gas is cheap, the car helps their brand image, and other car makers are selling decent amounts of sports cars.

The silvia got scrapped twice if i am not mistaken once in 2008 and the second time in about 2014? It is rumored that silvia could come back in 3-4 years . Also a new Z is being worked on maybe and it could have a 2 liter also. The 86 just needs an engine upgrade of sorts nothing else to the platform itself in my opinion . For honda i haven't really cared so much , but the sports concept they showed has potential maybe as a hybrid sports car.

that has now been proven to be a mistake (the Juke is discontinued) or possibly a lateral move, but either way they don't care.

The Z did enter a supposed stage of development with the Mini-Z, but Nissan has debunked any further movement several times saying they have no current plans to update or replace the Z34. Sucks, but that's the truth. What the Mini-Z actually was, was the whiteboard engineering for the Silvia that was never made.

Most current owners want more power and the take rate for manuals is very high (actually close to 70% in the BRZ). Not wanting to lose those current customers to other makers and realizing most probably can't make the financial jump to the higher trim Surpas. I really hope they re-consider releasing the car with a manual option, I know for me and many previous supra owners that it our wallets will open on the basis that the vehicle is released with the option of a manual.

With a pricier and more powerful Celica replacement maybe there will be room a for a $20k SF-R?

I sincerely doubt BMW would allow Toyota to sell their chassis for 86 money. From everything we've seen, there is nothing hinted at the 86's demise or replacement, people are just way too antsy while this Supra project isn't even complete..

That build would likely be very popular, provided Toyota

1) keeps the weight down to around 2900 lbs for this base version;
2) gives the engine a nice even torque curve without the infamous dip found in the FA20;
3) puts some serious effort into making the engine/exhaust sound good in-cabin (something woefully ignored with the twins); and
4) keeps the price reasonably competitive (about $40k USD).
