Key points
  • $42,990 for the 2.0 and $50,990 for the 3.0.
  • $8,000 price differences between the 2.0 and 3.0 Supra.
  • So far only 400 2021 3.0 Supras have been made.
  • The first batch of ’21 models will go on sale by early July.
  • U.S. is expecting a take-rate of about 20% for 2.0 models.

With a big assist from BMW, Toyota relaunched a modern version of its iconic Supra 2-seater coupe last July in the U.S. and sold 2,884 units by the end of 2019. Through April, Toyota sold 1,216 GR Supras in the U.S., reflecting a market economically challenged by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Those first GR Supras were ’20 models, and sometime next month a freighter should arrive on the East Coast carrying 400 Supras that were assembled for the ’21 model year at Magna Steyr’s Graz, Austria, plant before it closed down due to the pandemic.

This first batch of ’21 models, reaching customer driveways by early July, carry BMW’s upgraded B58 turbocharged 3.0L inline 6-cyl., rated at 382 hp – a Wards 10 Best Engines & Propulsion Systems winner.

We tested that engine last fall in BMW’s M340i sedan, in which it was spectacular, so it promises to be even more impressive in the smaller, lighter GR Supra.

Availability of the upgraded B58 also creates a bit of a quandary: The first customers who got their hands on the ’20 GR Supra got a 335-hp version of the B58 engine.

Is it really fair to award those customers who waited a year to get an extra 47 hp? In defense of the product planners, the ’21 GR Supra with the 6-cyl. has a starting price of $50,990, representing a bump of $1,000 over the ’20 model. The 335-hp engine will be available no longer in the GR Supra.

But wait, there’s more on the powertrain front.

In the ’21 GR Supra, beginning this fall, Toyota offers another engine for the first time, a BMW 255-hp 2.0L turbocharged 4-cyl. that delivers rich, throaty exhaust notes and lowers the starting price to an attractive $42,990.

If you’re confused about all this BMW DNA in Toyota’s long-cherished coupe, it boils down to this: Toyota needed a great inline 6-cyl. for a resurrected Supra and BMW needed an automaker partner to share capacity with its low-volume Z4 roadster.

The GR Supra and Z4 spring from the same BMW platform but have different sheetmetal. BMW got its new roadster, Toyota its coupe. Consider it a win-win.

It can be hard looking past this cross-brand pollination. Climbing inside the GR Supra, it looks like a BMW, right down to the transmission shifter, gauge cluster, switchgear and iDrive infotainment controller. On the 8.8-in. (22-cm) audio touchscreen, wasn’t there a way to replace the BMW fonts with something more familiar to Toyota customers?

Pop open the hood and Supra purists might snicker at the huge black plastic beauty cover with a Toyota logo on top of a BMW engine.

But it’s true that making a business case is awfully difficult for a low-volume, impractical sports car for a limited number of enthusiasts, and that the only way it’s possible is through creative endeavors like this one.

Make no mistake: after driving a ’20 GR Supra with the 335-hp 6-cyl. and a ’21 model with the 255-hp 4-cyl., it’s fair to say the GR Supra is enormously fun to drive. The partnership between the two companies gave Toyota full authority to tune the chassis for a feel distinctive from the Z4.

At the risk of giving a backhanded compliment, the Supra is Toyota’s most exhilarating, dynamically sound model since the LFA, at a fraction of the price.

Toyota product planners say 40% of Japanese customers for the Supra have picked the 4-cyl., and the U.S. team is expecting a take-rate of about 20%. The 6-cyl. ’21 GR Supra tips the scales at 3,400 lbs. (1,542 kg), or 219 lbs. (99 kg) heavier than the 4-cyl.

The Porsche Cayman represents the GR Supra’s competion, and to date the average transaction price for Toyota’s new coupe is $56,500.

To prep the ’21 GR Supra for the additional 47 hp, Toyota engineers added aluminum braces tying the strut towers to the radiator support for a stiffer front end, retuned the active differential and adjusted the stability-control and steering response.

The high-output B58 in the new model boosts torque from 365 lb.-ft. (495 Nm) to 368 lb.-ft. (499 Nm) at 1,800-5,000 rpm. Toyota says the new GR Supra 3.0 can sprint to 60 mph (97 km/h) in 3.9 seconds, down from 4.1 with the previous 6-cyl.

With the new 382-hp 6-cyl. offered in tandem with the 4-cyl., the ’21 GR Supra delivers a tasty Bavarian sandwich, piled high with Black Forest ham, Muenster cheese and extra sauerkraut. With a side of sushi.

It looks like someone broke the embargo! :)
Nah, embargo is May 17th, so it's fine...

As for the cost, I knew it and I was pissed to figure that price. In Japan, here are the price difference
RZ (3.0) - 7,313,000yen
SZ-R (2.0) - 6,013,000yen
SZ (2.0) - 4,995,000yen

Now, engine we got in 2.0 is SZ-R, but the rest is pretty much SZ w very few RZ & SZ-R stuff. When we're not getting active suspension, e-dif and other legit parts, but price difference is $8k? That's just ridiculous.

So 1k bump over MY20, that’s pretty insignificant compared to the improved spec. Good deal for those who are getting the MY21.
1K increase for the 3.0 with the updates is not bad. Hopefully the limited supply won't push dealerships to add on the ADM's again.
There is probably no increase. The $50,990 is including the $1000 shipping cost. The 2020 is $49,990 but they tack on $955 before it even gets here.
But if it is $1000 more for the base to begin with, that's still not bad because you get the larger screen in the interior etc which cost extra in the 2020 base.
I wish the Premium and A91 prices were here too.

The embargo is June 17th, not May. Redline reviews misspoke and admitted to it in the comments in their video.

Supra production started back up today. Dealers hopefully learned from the 2020 models not to try to sell them over sticker.

As soon as this news came out, the 2020's immediately became worth much less, especially with respect to ADM's!

I don't know if I should be happy or sad because even though Toyota is quoting a good price, these greedy dealers are going to mark the damn thing up even if it hurts their sales. It's not a numbers game for them when it comes to the supra. They don't care how many they sold. They care about how much they made on each sale. They are going to mark it up by $20k and then on negotiating would not go below $10k. I know that for sure. We will have to wait for 6-8 more months until they remove the markups.
