Going on about ten days or so, and I can say that my fix so far is 100%. No noise. No clunk. Just smooth and efficient operation. Its actually a little bit tighter with 1/16 extra turn on the plate. This may have also been what I was hearing when I thought it was the master brake cylinder, and bought a brace. But whatever. Its fixed, and now I have firm brakes and buttery smooth steering.![]()
Yes, I had to patiently remove the 20 or so screws and bolts on the underside, then mark the cap and housing, and cap depth, remove the cap with the three finger adapter and added grease mostly to the edges between the bushing and the housing with extra in the voids, around ~8 grams. But my case is special, in that it was frozen in place, and I have elevated temperatures in Texas, which most likely increased the viscosity of the grease after a few days to allow it to pass past the larger o-rings on the outside of the bushing, freeing the bushing to freely travel within the housing. Which is what I noticed as far as observing an absent driver-side "clunk" at low speeds when braking, after a few days post-op. Possibly from before, I was hearing the steering rack just rattling around before without any spring-induced positive pressure from the stuck bushing. As I mentioned in the post before, when I tried to pull it with a pair of needle-nose pliers, it was frozen in place. And yes I realize there was a threadlock/sealant on the threads from the factory for the cap or plate holding the steering rack bushing in place. I have no idea whether this was a complicating factor, or if it was simply just a lack of silicon grease at assembly or that had dried out. I have probably noticed the "clunk" for the last 5k or so.
As a far as year and mileage,' 23 and its in the upper 30K these days as it is my daily. It would be nice to have some feedback from Toyota or Bayerische as to the the actual material of the bushing, I know it is a hard plastic polymer, but that only narrows it down to a few options all of which are good to excellent when it comes to compatibility with the aftermarket lithium grease. I have a feeling it was chosen because it had the highest-level of compatibility, not the widest range. The breit choice if you will.
