If you are afraid of your battery going dead in the middle of coding, then you can do it with the engine running. However, depending on the module that you are coding, the ECU restart may stop the engine from running, and as I recall it makes a horrible noise when it happens and you think you threw a piston or something. But as long as you don't take hours to do the coding and the battery is healthy, that shouldn't be necessary.

I don't think that's a good idea. Just get a tender and keep your coding sessions to an hour at most. Check your battery before coding too, to make sure you are all good.
