Looking to buy
Hi,

I've recently sold my car and I'm considering buying a 3ltr Supra. I've never driven one, and I think I've only ever seen one Supra on the road. They seem to be quite rare.

I'm based in Manchester and I will be looking to modify the car to stage 2. I believe this should give around 460bhp. Is this correct? Also, can somebody recommend a reputable Supra tuner somewhere in, or close to Manchester. Do owners generally just use BMW specialists for Tuning and maintaining?

Anything to look out for when buying a Supra? Common issues or must have mods/options?

My budget is around ÂŁ45k which I'm hoping should get me a good, low mileage example.

I normally use Facebook owners groups, but there doesn't seem to be any groups for UK owners.

Any advice appreciated.

Cheers.

"Stages" literally don't mean anything. What mods are you considering for your car?
Sorry I'm used to VAG cars where people generally quote modifications in stages.

Stage 2 would be

Downpipe
Exhaust
Tune
Intake

Keep in mind. Only 2020s and some 2021 unicorns are tuneable as they are. You've also got the JB4 as a piggyback option, which is great.

You also only need a downpipe for those goals. Exhaust and Intake are fine until you get to big power.

500hp on a downpipe and tune (or JB4) is definitely doable.

That's good to know. I've used JB4's in the past. On my 335i and also my M135i. They are a good bit of kit.

I wanna piggyback a question and see if people are using BMW specialty shops for tuning needs. I do take my Supra to a shop for certain jobs and maintenance and they work with and race mostly BMWs/other european cars, but they’ll work on anything.

Stage 1: charge pipe, exhaust, intake, tune
Stage 2: downpipe
Stage 3: turbo
Just to clarify on how I’ve heard it for future reference
Our cars are a bit different..

Stage 1: just a tune
Stage 2: Catless downpipe

I've never heard of Stage 3 for the MKV but I imagine that would entail a charge pipe, intake manifold/intercooler, and maybe a turbo. Our factory bolt on components are actually pretty free flowing, you can make big power with just a catless downpipe and a competent tuner.

i was being kind earlier, but the gasket has been blown. Stages are bullshit marketing hype that literally stems from video games. No one that is serious about tuning their car talks or thinks in "stages." If they did, there would be millions of them. Fuel type, injection sizes, port, fuel pump, spark plugs, spark plug gaps, methanol injection, methonal as fuel, nitrous, radials, etc. etc. etc. And this isn't car or manufacturer specific.

Chase times, not hp or "stage" bullshit.

Sorry. Happy Holidays. Just a pet peeve.

I understand that you think stages is stupid. I think it is for this particular car aswell. But stages are very accepted in general. Take Rtr / Roush mustang builds for example, all set « stages ». Stage 3, here in the states at least, are either boosted or upgraded turbos. Heck, I think AMS even has stages for the Supra

I use a BMW specific shop around me, though they do work with all Euros and probably anything really, they specialize in BMWs, though.

I bought mine without ever driving one. I honestly can't think of any negatives that I have experienced yet. I am extremely happy with my purchase. It drives extremely well right out of the box and seems to takes to mods extremely well. I can't imagine you could go wrong by getting one. ?

I mean, I'm not buying it. What stage is my car, what stage is Norris's/p2uned or Jesse's? We all have upgraded turbos - I run 10s, Jesse runs 9s, Norris is in the 8s.

I get it, I understand that the (lack of) marketing teams at BM and MHD correlate Downpipe and Exhaust or whatever to mean 'install this version of our OTS map' but that still doesn't mean anything. Especially if it's not consistent around cars.

That's not where the madness ends. It doesn't correlate even to tunes, if you can take a civic and slap bolt ons, call it stage 2, and make 250hp. Or toss a Nitrous Kit on a 5L Mustang and call that stage 1. Or throw a tune on a GTR and call that Stage 4.

It's inconsistent, doesn't translate car to car, leaves out millions of details, and encourages people that don't know what they're doing to strive for 'enough money to buy stage 3' or whatever that means, and blow their shit up, because they didn't upgrade the fuel system.

In less time than this took to write out, you could just say, "I'm looking to run a low 11 1/4, what do I do?" And that would translate perfectly to any platform without the bullshit.
