FT-1 Confirmed to Spawn Next Toyota Sportscar?

Recently, Toyota president Akio Toyoda was saying that “if the FT-1 makes a good strong impression on the market, then we will add it to the line-up.” However, the automaker knew the concept will make a hit after unveiling, as rumor is that the new sportscar is already on the drawing board.

A source close to Toyota told Motoring.com.au that the FT-1 will surely give birth to a new sportscar. Its entry level version is expected to be powered by a 2-liter turbocharged gasoline engine, while the performance version will come
with 2.5-liter V6 hybrid powertrain and a transaxle, making more than 400 hp.

We all know car companies monitor forums and are all about social media these days and Toyota is no exception. Akio has already said that if they get a lot of positive feedback they will build it. Let's LET THEM HEAR IT! Spread the word and tell them how excited you are at the sites below!

To increase the chance of production for the FT-1 concept, please write, email, post on FB and call Toyota and ask them to built this car!!!

I mean really all you need to do is search for FT1 concept on the net (twitter, fb, the automotive media sites) and you will see there is a TON of buzz. I just don't see how this car won't be made if all that they want is to see good feedback.

Forums these days are a great place for companies to gauge reaction and interest among enthusiasts. A car like the FT-1 is not going to catch on with the mainstream average joe. It'll be spawned off the backs of enthusiasts who clamor for the iconic name to be remade. I bet they are monitoring forums like this one to see what people are saying.

Production FT-1 could lead a new wave of driver-focused Toyotas, says company boss

Get ready for Toyotas that aren’t boring!

The FT-1 concept could reach production to spearhead a new generation of driver-focused Toyotas, a senior figure in the company has revealed to Top Gear.

Karl Schlicht, executive vice-president at Toyota Motor Europe, said the clamorous reaction to the two-seat, rear-drive sports car - dubbed the ‘new Supra' and revealed last month in Detroit - means the FT-1 could follow the journey of the LF-LC.

"The reaction [to the FT-1] was much stronger than even we thought," said Schlicht. "Production? It's possible. We need more emotional cars, and Akio-san is encouraging that."

Akio-san is Akio Toyoda, Toyota boss since 2009 and the man, says Schlict, who wants to nix the company's 'cars as white goods' reputation and make it exciting again.

"You're going to see more surprises from Toyota more often," said Schlicht. "In the past we've been too neutral and bland. We need more emotion, and if some people don't like it that's OK."

Schlicht conceded that Toyota has previously been guilty of chasing sales volumes instead of building brilliant cars, a strategy Toyoda is turning around. "He believes Toyotas should be drivers' cars," says Schlicht. "Our cars need to improve, especially for European tastes..."

Which should mean better-driving Toyotas with better interiors, a strategy the company will pursue even if it means lower sales than Toyota has achieved in the past. "We don't have any volume targets," Schlicht revealed. "If we sell 10 million cars [globally per year], that's great, but that's not the main aim. We're not worried if we alienate a few people."

So expect less vanilla from Toyota's styling department, with even the next Aygo - revealed at next week's Geneva show - expected to look far more aggressive, and ‘Japan-led' style than its cutesy Peugeot and Citroen brothers. No, really.

However, despite all the talk of more exciting Toyotas, Schlict said that - despite years of rumours - the arrival of a more powerful version of the GT86 was not a given.

"We want to keep that car pure," he said. "You put a turbo on it, give it bigger tyres, and you start turning it into a different category of car..."

TOYOTA BOSS PROMISES MORE “EMOTIONAL SURPRISES” LIKE FT-1 CONCEPT

The Toyota FT-1 concept was one of the most talked about cars at this year’s Detroit auto show and the automaker is promising to release more cars like it. In an interview with Auto Express, Karl Schlicht, the executive vice president of Toyota Europe, said to “expect more risky designs” and “emotional surprises” like the FT-1 concept, which is widely considered to be the next Toyota Supra, should it make it to production.

Schlicht credits the existence of the FT-1 concept to Toyota CEO Akio Toyoda and he’s confident that more exciting cars are on the way.

If Akio wasn’t CEO then our products would still be bland, but they’re not because he’s prepared to make a mistake,” Schlicht said. “The LFA was the hardest project to push through, but [Toyoda] did it anyway. He wanted to liberate the minds of his engineers. In a way the FT-1 is the next stage in that, a more accessible version of the LFA.

In addition to the LFA, Toyoda played an important role in pushing the Scion FR-S into production, ending the automaker’s decades-long drought of offering an affordable rear-drive sports car. Next up in the pipeline is the 2015 Lexus RC 350 and RC F coupe, which are aimed directly at BMW 4 Series and Mercedes-Benz C-Class coupes. Toyota, of course, will still be focused on its volume products like the Camry and Prius, but the automaker is quickly proving it can make exciting cars.

“Toyota has really changed under Akio Toyoda – he really doesn’t care about selling more cars than anyone else, in fact he’s paranoid about growing too quickly,” Schlicht said. “He’s told everyone in the company not to chase the number one spot, but to do things right, make the best cars and the money will come.”

These 2.x liter engine rumors better be false. Sounds more proper for the rumored sub-FRS sports car than the Supra, which should have a properly lineup leading motor. Not something barely bigger than the 2.0L 4 cyl FRS engine

 2.5L V6 making 400hp for Toyota's flagship and they will sell it at 50K+ .... sure.... Who writes this nonsense? Even for an entry level model that would be a big fail imo.

Sometimes the media gets bored and make things up in order bring traffic to their site and or sale more magazines.

If the Supra gets a 4 cyl then Toyoda should fire himself. But it won't happen, so no worries.
