Footwell lights help needed

Are we absolutely sure that the wiring harness for these isn't on the car? In my experience most manufacturers use the same harness from a standpoint of efficiency and then just tape up the unused connectors but this is pure speculation based on my history of messing with cars.

Imagine the cost difference when you scale it up between just including a few extra feet of wire and a couple of dollars of plastic connectors versus having a completely secondary production line or process or whatever.. just doesn't make sense to me.

That would be awesome and certainly make sense from a mass production standpoint. But I’ve also come to another thought if the harness would happen to not be there. These lights appear to be exactly the same size. I don’t know if the light itself is different in any way, but I think I’m also going to get a pair of trunk lights and try them first before I were to modify the connector from a salvage. One less step in the process if it works.

So my idea of the plug for the trunk lights being the same was almost right. The slight difference preventing it from going into the footwell light is the piece on the side of the plug. Tried my best to highlight what I’m talking about. I believe I’m going to look for a Supra at a junkyard, snip off the trunk lights, and remove that piece because otherwise they appear to fit perfectly. The small tab for keeping it connected looks to be in the right spot. Another project for the spring time. In the picture the trunk light is on top, footwell light is on the bottom. You can see the slot that piece slides into. It’s sideways on the footwell light.

You are correct, most cars have a blank plug with unused wires. But with German cars it has been my experience that they'll have different wiring harness per car trim and region.

I learned the hard way in the past. I had swapped the leather seats on my BMW M2 with Euro Alcantara seats. The main seat connection and buttons were physically the same but the wiring order was totally different! (So I had to swap the wiring harness and seat buttons as it was not compatible with the US spec ones even though it looked the same)

I have the same experience, buddy of mine did a seat swap on a E92, both cars (doner and his) were roughfly the same age and both were Euro models so it should be a walk in the park, right?
not so... we had a all kinds of warnings on the dash and malfunctions. At the end of the day it sort of worked but we could never get all functions of the new seat to work.
so even on the same model and age there are differences in the wiring on these cars, depending on the trim level and factory installed equipment

Thanks! I was thinking if the trunk lights from the donor Supra work as footwell lights I was maybe going to install the new footwell lights behind the seats like what you had done. Might as well try to use them since I bought them.

Resurrecting an old thread. Did anyone ever figure this out? I just purchased 2x footwell lights and wanted to wire these up. Other than the amazon pigtails, can we use the trunk connector to connect these up and wire them to the fuse? I just wanted to keep this looking as stock as possible. I already have the Tesa wire loom harness tape ready.

The factory installation could have been damaged during transportation or broken down if you touched it. The wires could become unusable after several years of use. If you want to restore the operation of the foot lighting system from Toyota, then try contacting the master. But I advise you to purchase some LED strips from https://www.vont.com/product/smart-strip-lights-led-strip-lights/ and install them yourself. There is nothing complicated in the installation, you need to connect to the battery, and they will work when the ignition is turned on. In addition, they consume little energy, but they shine much brighter than the built-in Toyota system.

Probably can use the trunk connectors if you modify them. My pictures above show the difference. I had a poke around in the passenger footwell just now and found the grey w/ yellow striped wire that was mentioned in a previous door puddle lamp DIY thread. Got to assume it is the same as the wire in the door. I want to get a tester to make sure it performs the exact same way as the door lights. If so that’s the wire I’m going to tap on each side of the car.

TLDR:

Use the provided fuse tap and plug your control box into fuse F62. Move the existing fuse to the tap. It's in the footwell next to the BCM. You can check a fuse panel diagram to find it.

Connect all your LED strips to the control box.

Congrats! Your chosen RGB light color will turn on when the door opens or vehicle is locked/unlocked. They will turn off after 6 minutes of inactivity.

If you want the lights to turn off after you leave park: no bueno.

If you want the lights to go white when you open the door, then switch to color when door closes: nobody has figured that out. "That" is called Door Assist.

For my use case? I want soft footwell lighting in my chosen color at all times, so I don't care if Door Assist doesn't work, or if lights are tied to Park/Drive.

All the wires can be hidden above the plastic trays that pop out from under the dash.

The control box and fuse tap can be entirely hidden behind the passenger kickplate.
