Personally, I love information but I can do without rumors unless there is something to back it up somewhat. My main issue is that I have experience in business, manufacturing, marketing and so on. To me it seems clear as day what’s coming our way and the fluff pieces have no effect on me. I understand that this car is a co-development between BMW and Toyota. I understand they are both benefiting from each other in multiple ways, however when you are looking at an almost finished product and it screams one company (BMW) over another (Toyota) there is a very simple reason for it.

This is of course my opinion and it is based on my education and experience in business. The reason it seems like a Z4 with Supra clothes it’s because it’s most likely is. A partnership can mean many things, it doesn’t mean both companies put equal amount of money, engineering and so on. BMW wanted a new Z4 but couldn’t justify the cost, an idea was born to allow Toyota to take advantage of the situation and fund a portion of the development so it would work for both companies. In return bmw gets their Z4 back and Toyota finally gets a real sports car in their stable again. Using the Supra name only makes sense.

Toyota knew they needed a story to differentiate the Supra from the Z4 as much as possible so they focused on tuning, suspension and weight (automatic weight savings over the Z4 convertible) which they didn’t have to work too hard to achieve. These are the main points Toyota has pointed out but they are also the most common sense if you know anything about cars.

The main difference why the cars will feel different is because one is a convertible and the other is a coupe. Give the Supra minor suspension tuning, probably slightly different exhaust note and slight weight savings and you got yourself a more "pure sports car" compared to the Z4.

BMW would never allow the Supra to be a better car than the Z4 (common sense) so there are limitations to what Toyota can do. Now, if the rumors are true and Toyota did tinker with a bmw engine or built their own version, bmw would also have access to it in the Z4 and I think this is where the real problem is. We will only get this motor if both parties can use them. My guess is You will be seeing this motor in a Lexus version of the Supra in a few years where Toyota can make enough adjustments to be able to claim it their own. The A90 is just a foot in the door for bigger and better things. Again, just my opinion.

This car was more interesting as a rumor.. reality is not looking so good. Lol

Seems like the lower COG and the lower weight are 4cyl model specs.

Interesting. My interpretation of Tada's comments seems to suggest that the low COG and 1400kg (approx 3080lbs) remarks were in respect to the six? (Also Moto Miwa's comments)

The problem is, the hard facts we have on this car is very, very little:

- Made in Austria
- New platform, developed by BMW and Toyota
- I6 turbo
- RWD
- low COG
- High torsional rigidity
- two seater
- Fancy diff
- 255 F 275 R Michelins

Anything else, is ultimately rumours and hints, some from reputable sources, others not.

I could be wrong but.. advertising is such.. that they’d tell you the best possible number for a given aspect of the car without all the details behind it to make it sound enticing.

Sorta like.. hey this car’s starting msrp is 39995... however we will never build such a car cause money is in the options and the higher spec’d models.

Tada himself had mentioned that the 4cyl had the better balance of the two. Which ultimately lets me assume that the other awesome weight related specs are also those of the 4cyl. Well.. who knows. Let’s wait and watch this unfold .. one of two things will happen...

1) decent car and a sincere attempt by Toyota but it’s too late the market with average specs (LFA / NSX comes to mind)
2) it’s a rebadged BMW and enthusiast are holding out for a higher spec model that’s promised in the coming years.

If people that are following the car don’t buy this car at inception... I don’t see someone that knows nothing about a Supra even thinking about battling the market up charge and lack of availability to buy one. This will lead to this car being a dud and Toyota will not even follow up with faster and fun version later on. And we are back to square one.

Yeah, fair points.... interesting. It'd be nice if Toyota could throw us a bone, a hint, anything. Something tangible to build some excitement (or the pessimistic approach - kill our enthusiasm and interest) until release. Maybe a lap time, power/weight, official mass, 1/4 mile time... just something more than "it handles awesome and it's a six turbo". All these rumours, theories are giving us cabin fever.

Couldn't agree more. I wish Toyota would do something similar to what Dodge did with the Demon. There was a countdown until its release and every few weeks a new teaser video would be released giving away some new info. It sure kept the hype up for the car. Hopefully we get some good news soon.

Never seen Toyota ever do that in the past.. release concrete specs prior to debut... heck.. I’ll almost bet that we will know nothing about pricing till few weeks before it actually hits the dealership pipelines.

It’s Toyota, they don’t remember what it’s like to be excited about anything. The only thing they are excited about is how much money they are going to make on the upcoming Corolla.

Every week there was a teaser on Thursday. Dodge had something to make the industry go wild...

What’s the best case scenario with the MkV Supra..

1) 400hp
2) 3.3 seconds to 60mph
3) 3k curb weight
4) 55k msrp
5) manual transmission

What’s mind boggling about even the above optimistic spec ?? Lol

Most probably we will get..
1) 350hp
2) 3.8 - 4.0 seconds to 60mph
3) 3300lb curb weight
4) 65k msrp
5) auto only
