Wow. This **might be** what I am looking for.

I’m building a kind of GT4 racing car and I need the infotainment screen to become a camera monitor to project a camera looking at the rear of the car while driving on the track.

would this work for My project?
Why does your rearview mirror not work?

Just confirming that, just like other BMW's, the second USB port on our headunit can be activated (just gotta code it Headunit -> 3000HMI -> CDMM_USB_PORTS -> usb1_usb2_sia or something like that & get a HSD to USB cable) and it does carry the aux like the port next to the wireless charger (if you have aux enabled). So, if you wanted, you could probably jam everything required for audio inside the dash - I ran my cable out to the passenger side tho in case the USB port dies or something.

Stupid question, but if the new headunit you linked supports both carplay and android auto, what's the need for the aux (next to the wireless charger) or the additional USB port on the headunit?

The only way for you to hear the audio coming from the headunit thru the cars audio system is for it to be fed into that audio system via the aux input e.g. the audio being generated by AA via Spotify or something (I think the headunit did come with a little speaker, but I never connected it).

I think some older BMW's had a 3.5mm aux input, but we have to use a USB port & converter.

And to be clear, you don't need the second port, I'm just anal about having a usb cable always connected in front of the charger - I already removed that piece of crap cover blocking it, don't want a cable there now ;)

Haven't heard anything on this in a while. Have you come across any additional issues, besides the mounting bracket?

I currently use AAiDrive, which is functional enough for android, but it requires the supra connect app, and I have a sneaking suspicion that app isn't going to last much longer. At least without a subscription. So I'm researching any and all options now. I have had Xtrons units in the past, and they have been pretty reliable for the few years that I used them.

So iDrive controls seem to operate the XTrons headunit AND iDrive at the same time. I think... I managed to turn on the iDrive nav. once when I was changing songs... Learned that you've gotta use the < and > buttons on the numbered row to avoid that...

Alright, well it's over-engineered, exposed my lack of CAD knowledge/technique, and it's certainly not a RapidDesign :p - but if you need it, ere:

You're selling yourself short, looks real nice to me. The finish/colour on the adaptor is slightly different to the OEM dash but thats being picky. Have you considered the option of "if you can't replicate it perfectly then make it a feature" thing? So a different surface finish to actually highlight it when you do get a look at it. I've used that technique a few times when making stuff to blend with the OEM and can't achieve it that well. Just make it a distinct feature. Not too distinct it shouts at you just enough to say "hey I'm not trying to match just blend" kind of thing.

One of my many prototypes (unpainted) ended up like this, which I thought looked kinda cool:
1779372913141-fl.webp

Kinda leaned into the whole 'well I can't hide this thing'.

I just got too focused on making it, and not so focused on trying to paint match the trim (which I didn't even try to do...).

Print looks really nice! Would you do it over again? I have a mmi box but would love a bigger screen.
I like using the touch screen, which the MMI boxes don't have, right? So for that, sure.

Making the mount cost me over double what the headunit did :) so maybe not so much that way lol.

Were you able to get around this issue yet?

Awesome work on the print by the way!

Oh i just use the steering wheel controls for music (didn't realize the little scroll wheel thing is the play/pause, next and previous) now and touchscreen for everything else. So, at best, a workaround.
