It looks like a design study for the next RAV4. It’s due for a replacement soon.

I asked one of the marketing/PR people and they said it's slotted to possibly replace the FJ Cruiser in order to compete in the offroad/adventure segment.

What would a CF roof save, maybe 100 lbs? Now add a CF hood and liftgate/trunk lid....

I have a two part question. One, does anyone have more info on this car (below)? Two, are there any other models or prototypes that are related to this project that Toyota has not released?

If we think of it literally probably not a ton, but once you consider a roof can be the sum of all the parts (pillars, hatch, etc) things get more interesting. The car is also very no frills apparently just like the 86, and since it's actually about the same size then being a similar weight isn't so outlandish IMO.

I like to simplify it in my mind as dropping an aluminum block I6-TT (they aren't that heavy overall) into an 86, adding a little more luxury, and then using some lightweight materials to balance the weight out given the motor and leather.

Yeah roof alone, not much.

I remember in my E92 M3 days, the weight savings between a carbon roof car and a steel moonroof (the only two options) was 44lbs. It made a difference being at the top of the car, but still not going to be hundreds of pounds.

Now if it's like you and A70 theorize/know, and we get a carbon roof, pillars, hatch, maybe even decklid and hood, could easily be enough bits and bobs to get you there.

yep, just 6cylinder car with paddles. apparently this has never changed either from what I heard.

they've been testing the same cars for the same purpose and while there are all sorts of rumors and arguments, the 6cyl car was always the goal. that said, it doesn't mean they arent still developing other options, just means they arent intended for production at this time.
This is actually a bit of good and bad news at the same time i guess. I always thought the car should have been with 6 cylinder turbo engine and the dream setup would be inline 6 and TT , this would make the dream car for me as i have always wanted a supra . The bad news is my recent insecurities about the money , there are some things that must be bought by 2019 . A 4 cyl was my insurance of sorts that i could buy the car . Now there are 2 options for me as i see it , either i will have 55k or i hope that the next 86/celica has a 250+ hp engine .

^ Hopefully it all works out for you. But I would think if the base model of the Supra successor comes in at 340 HP+, that leaves room for the 86 to go up at least 40-50 hp. I wouldn't be surprised if this raises the price of the car by a few grand though.

On another note rumors are that the rear mid engine Corvette may show up at Detroit. If Toyota shows something I really hope its special. Otherwise, I can see this car being over shadowed by that Corvette (different class I know) but still look at what happened to the NSX when it was finally revealed, the Ford GT stole the attention and show.

..doubt the next gen 86 will gain much HP especially when the newest Civic Si still pushes 205 and the Miata is still in the 100s. If the Supra ends up being a lightweight my bet is the next 86 will become even lighter.

thanks ! Yeah if all goes well i can afford it even with 60k , the worst case scenario is that i have around 40k +/- for a car by that time , i would want tho a 86 to take a step up in power and/or in price, i believe the spot it should be is with around 250 -260 hp , this car has serious potential .
For Detroit i believe the comeback of the legendary supra will be show shattering and leave the corevette to the shadows if the supra is as good as we hear it is in this forum. So i dont worry at all .

i believe the next 86 will downsize and adopt some mild hybrid system , i am saying this because i agree with you it will be lighter , as has been stated previously by engineers . These are the only changes that will reduce both weight and emmisions and increase speed and at the same time, so they make some sense. This i believe will push power a little over 220 maybe 230hp , but i believe it will be enough given the already low weight of the car.
