I tried GPS once with my GoPros but they over heated and shut off like 5 minutes into the session.

I don't think you'll get many good answers since most are using an external GPS puck suctioned to the windshield, or something similar that has a more direct line of sight to satellites. You would probably be better served by asking GoPro themselves to see if the antenna inside has had any improvements made.

Generally not a big issue on motorbikes... other story in the car.
In the car it worked ok while using it in the UK. But this summer I traveled to Italy and did a trackday at Vallelunga (Rome, August, 40+ degrees celsius) and the GoPro overheated badly and shut off. All I have is footage from paddock to pitlane

I am considering buying a GPS puck (Racebox mini probably) as well... but will have to replace the GoPro before that... hence the question as I could "spread" the cost.
Also, the analysis software I use works nicely with the GoPro data.

One thing I have done in the past (as an option to having GPS) is just counting the time between laps on the recording to get general lap times.

Just unboxed the Daiwa Racing Labo heat exchanger (DRLRA010041)

Really impressed with it in person and definitely excited to get it installed. This will be my first cooling upgrade, and since I’ve been dealing with heat soak during track sessions, I’m very curious to see how much difference the heat exchanger alone will make.


Can’t wait to get back on track and see the results. I’ll update the thread once I’ve had a chance to properly test it!

Last time I was at Brands Hatch (London) last month, I purchased TrackAddict lap time on my iPhone and stuck it to the rear windshield. But it didn't get a fix as well. I think the heating elements or something shields the phone.

What kind of resolution/accuracy do you need? I used Harry's Lap Timer (Pro, if it matters) and never had any problems with it not reading. I kept my phone on a magnet attached to the windshield so I could view the lap times. I was able to use it to get an idea of where I could improve, but not sure if it's detailed enough for ya.

In reality: quarter of a second. (even half, to be honest ). It's mostly just to see if I'm going slower/faster. I am nowhere good and track mostly to have fun/enjoy the car.
TrackAddict should be ok. I'm definitely not chasing 1/1000s of a second...

The extra data I extract and analyse from the GoPro is mostly for fun/toying around, even though it lead to some interesting learnings here and there, but again, plaything.

I'll try again with the phone attached to the widnshield next time.
I put it on the rear window as I didn't want it to be in the GoPro shot and I think the rear window shields more the signal.

While, with normal GPS fix on a bike:

Even though I got some interesting enough "visualisations" (modern art) due to broken gps data sometimes.

Any phone app without an external GPS connected is going to be low resolution compared, as the phone GPS is 1hz vs 10hz+ of an external GPS device. Years back I did a back to back with Harry's with and without external GPS.

Already ahead of you I’m actually waiting for the do88 MERA intake manifold to be restocked. The heat exchanger was always planned as the first step, not the last one.

I’d rather upgrade one thing at a time and actually see what difference each part makes on track instead of throwing everything at the car at once.

I use a race box mini s. The stand-alone feature is great especially on a bike, just hit start standalone recording and go about your laps.

Data is good enough for track enjoyment and it's easy to compare previous laps to identify where you might be making up time/why.

I have done video overlay once, it's a feature but definitely has a learning curve to it.

If you want a better GPS than a phone, I'd say it's one of the simplest no fuss solutions out there. Hook and loop mount it, hit record, done. If you want vehicle sensor telemetry ever, just stop wasting time and get an Aim Solo

Gotcha. I used Harry's for the lap timer (it was within .01 of my transponder) and to record/overlay video. The GPS gave me a rough idea of what was going on, but not good enough if you are actually wanting to use it as a tool for improvement.

Same, use it with Racechrono and it's great. I found a trick to mounting this by pulling off the speaker cover in front of the infotainment screen and using neodym magnets under the mesh that line of with the racebox magnets. The screen is metal so magnets stay in place and racebox sticks in place really well and easy enough to remove with a twist.
