Anyone have experience replacing their instrument cluster?

New vehicle, detailer messed up the gauge cluster with some chemicals they “detailed” it with and they had to pay to replace it.

My local toyota has replaced the parts and installed the new one. They said the gauge lights up as if it is connected but it will not reflect any rpm data, etc. Their tech rep is working on figuring it out.

Anyone have any ideas why?

EDIT:

Incase anyone has to deal with this…
Someone below mentioned coding via ISTA toyota software.

My mechanic friend also sent some screenshots of the AllData install guide.

EDIT:

This process has been shitty to deal with but there may be 1 convenience through it all. The toyota tech rep is currently in contact with the bmw ista software people to send them the new update for the car and this update actually unlocks the car’s ecu which we all know 2022+ are locked ecu. So that’s a nice 1-2k cost removal for a tune when I decide to do so. The ista software is actually z4 software as well incase anyone is curious, I know we all know it’s z4 dna but I didn’t think the ecu software itself was z4.

I’ll be posting my followup experience with the toyota that damaged the vehicle once the repairs are done and car is good to go.

EDIT:
Heads up for anyone that may deal with this. Toyota just told me it will be 1-2 days and the update will be sent and applied to the vehicle. They figured this out 5 days ago from today being Wednesday.

I’ll ask them if this update can be applied to all new supras looking to get their ecu unlocked, maybe not since the update is being applied purely because the cluster is a more recent version than the entire car itself. Will post soon

EDIT:
Update is working, running final checks and should be picking up within the next hour. I’ll confirm the ecu stuff at the dealer if possible.

EDIT:

Got the car back, no dealer fuck up from Toyota of Fred Anderson in Charleston, SC. Great Toyota from my experience in the service dept.

Asked the service manager is the ecu thing legit? He said 50/50 so I’m going to go with a no but I’ll update once I bring it to a tuner for them to see.

The field rep also said this took longer than a normal service since there was no supra in their system that has ever went through this process and the update was directed for my specific vin. Funny because now occasionally there’s something in german on my screen but I don’t mind thats a funny unique detail with my car now.

I do feel a little fucked in the idea of bimmercode because how reliable can I know it is working on a 1of1 system update?

Doesn’t it need coding in go see BMW
Are you saying from experience or just a guess? If not a guess, what exactly do you mean coding. Coding the instrument cluster or the cars computer for the cluster to integrate?

You have to code it to the car via ISTA. Toyota dealer has their own version.
Hell yea man thanks for the specifics. I assumed their supra tech maybe just plugged it in expecting it to work but this sounds like a viable solution.

Not sure if you would have any further insight but this is what they’re saying after I sent what you said on top of the alldata screenshots I sent to them.

“It’s not an issue with being able to program it, it’s an issue with the actual software availability. The one we have is the most recent version, however, your current cluster came with a newer version than we have, and newer than any dealership has. We are trying to figure out how to get a hold of the newest version as that’s the only version your cluster will take programming. He’s tried using the older version, but nothing worked on your cluster (fuel, miles, speed, etc). That’s when the field rep got involved. We should be hearing something today and I will update you”

I’d assume they would just need to be directly sent an update from the manufacture if this is the case or they don’t actually have the most recent update.

I remember I bought mine used, and the screen was all scratched up. Well, the anti-glare coating was. I removed the screen and went to town taking off all that coating. I think it looks 100% better without it.

What did the detailer do to mess it up?

They applied some waxy substance that dried horribly and stained the whole thing, they even had me take it to a high end detailer to test different chems to clean it and it did nothing.

Ok. Now I’m worried. My cluster had scratches all over it when delivered and is set to be replaced by Toyota under warranty. FML.

Well If you tell me what dealer is going to fix it I can tell my dealer to email their team the software update. I got u bucko

Go ahead and tell them too. Mine is specific to a 23 3.0 premium AT. If yours is the same im sure its good bc its a universal software update for supra in general.
You can also put the request in to that dealer to go ahead and get the update software because it’s been a week since they figured this out over here but they’re slowly making progress.

According to my toyota service manager that said the local field tech told him this. The update isn’t out but they may push me a specific update for this cluster and I would assume they would release a new one for all supras. Definitely a nice feature to unlock the ecu for free.

What do you mean unlock? When a dealer does an update it locks the ecu.

After 2020 or 2021 models the ecu on the supra was locked meaning you had to send it off in order to (1) unlock it and then (2) tune it. Now with this update according to the info shared with me that came from the tech team from bmw the new supra/z4 update unlocks ecu meaning now you bypassed a $1-2k process and can go straight to a tune like 20/21 models

Oh yeah just to share my experience further. It took 2 weeks to get the cluster delivered and a week to figure out how to program it. They’ll give you a rental but I would let them get it all settled and once it’s done ask to speak to the gm and offer you an inconvenience compensation. I’m going to ask mine to pay for my payment & insurance for the time I have not had the car due to their mistake. Lets see how this goes lol. I’ll have a 2nd request after to apply a credit & check to pay for the cost of 4 new stock tires. I’ll need to check on my vehicle extended warranties to make sure the new parts are covered, if not, they will need to pay for an addendum/amendment to the extended warranty.
