Hi my name is Lik (nickname), I first got in to cars in the early 90s. Sorry in advance if this is long, I really love cars.
I grew up in Southern California and my older cousin would take me to the street races in Torrance, Hollywood, Ontario, Sylmar, etc. Those early days it was just straight quarter milish runs near secluded areas near train tracks or industrial areas. Civics, Integras, CRXs, MR2s, Supras, 240sx, 300z's, eclipses, talons, 3000gts and random other cars that would meet up and race. Met up with the homies at someone's house till everyone showed up. When everyone was there we would roll out pretty deep and start hitting the regular spots to see if people were there. We'd all park on the sides then walk around checking out the other cars and seeing who would want to race. When races were set they'd line up and someone would call the start. It wasn't sexy racing girls like in the movies, it was random dudes in baggy pants and hoodies or Nautica/Tommy Hilfiger jackets. Racing would go on until we got bored or the cops would come. If a lot of cops came there would be helicopters chasing you around to with their lights. If you get pulled over it's usually just a fix it ticket for car being too low or some random illegal car part. I didn't have a license yet but I was already hooked. Bought all the Turbo Mags and Super Streets to see all the cars.
I fell in love with the Mitsubishi Eclipse. I loved how it had 1 big titty on the hood like the engine was so big it was bursting. The body was so curvy and it had a fat ass It didn't end up being my first car though, I ended up getting my dad's old Mercedes 300D from the late eighties. Ran on diesel. My quarter mile time was probably 3.4 minutes if I rocked my body back and forth the whole time. When I turned 18 I was finally able to get the car I wanted. I went to the Cerritos Mitsubishi dealership and saw a 99 GS-T in Maroon with tan interior. I wanted silver or black but I said I was gonna put a full body kit and paint it so it didn't matter. I started with lowering springs, then an intake, a blow off valve, a Greddy exhaust. I didn't want to have a body kit everyone had so I took all the pieces from other kits. Then I got rims, 3 piece Gewalt Evolutions from a friend who was selling his. Then I started seeing cars with Chameleon paint jobs. I ended up painting the car red to gold house of kolors chameleon. The car was looking good but I wanted to go faster. My cousin found a big 16g turbo with a large intercooler from someone selling nearby. I bought it and took everything to Road Race Engineering, they are still known for DSM builds. I had them install it with 720 injectors with a boost controller and a super AFC controller. They did the tune and I was set. I would drive that motherfucker everywhere and turn heads. Back then cars were either show or go, not both. I wanted to have both so when someone would rev on me thinking I didn't have any engine mods I could smoke them. The last things I did to the car were alpine amp, JL speakers, Alpine tv/dvd/radio, white pleather interior and some adjustable coil overs that fixed the camber. That car was so much fun and was a big part of my younger days. It even almost made it in the first Fast and the Furious movie but that's another story (f*ck you Car Craft for fucking up my boost controller).
I have more pics if you're interested I can upload a few more, this one I have underneath my desk protector. I still have the car but it's at my parents house in Cali and I'm in Houston now, so I plan to bring it here this summer maybe. I need some advice on how to get it back and running, it worked fine when I left it, just haven't started it in a while.
Time passed by so quickly, I'm no longer a teen going to street races till 4am in the morning. I'm a grown man with a wife and 5 kids. I have responsibilities and people who I take care of but deep in my heart I am still that 16 year old in love with cars. I was shopping for a GR86 for my son who's about to get his license when I saw a 22 or 23 red supra. My wife said test drive it since we're here. I said no, if I do I'm going to buy it. After she did some convincing I took the test drive. I drove it carefully at first in the parking lot, then I took it on the road and floored that bitch, the wheels spun and I was like ok I have to buy this. I talked to the salesperson and started the process, then he said 2 other people are trying to buy it. So I said I'm not paying extra, I'll pay what it is and if they want more I'll just leave. Someone else ended up buying it since he was trading in a raptor at a loss they would wake more money with them. Screw that, I hate dealerships, I don't want to take the time to negotiate and wait forever. I went home disappointed. Here I sit broken hearted, came to shit but only farted. Started drinking since it's the weekend. When I drink I tend to purchase shit online and wake up surprised. I ended up buying a phantom gray 2020 supra 3.0 premium with 11k miles from Carvana. I didn't know shit about Supras, the different years, the models, the rarity of different paints. I said hey it's gray, I kind of wanted red like I test drove. I'll just get it wrapped later. 2020's ok, it had low miles even if it's old. Little did I know that 2020 was easily modable and phantom gray was a rare color. Drunk me hit the jackpot.
The car came a few days later and when I saw the color I fell in love. I got in the car, revved it. Saw a sport button, then pushed it, revved it again and it did the pops and burble. Drove it around and it was fast and loud, my top 2 turn ons. I am a Supra lover now, I'm glad to join the club. I've been lurking the forums on how to upgrade my car and this place has been really useful. Thank you all for your posts and sharing all your experiences and tips.
My first mod was installing the MST V2 intake myself, broke the breather hose, still broken. I need to install it, I bought 3 extras just in case I mess it up again. I've been drinking lately so drunk me bought the heritage tail lights, rex speed reverse/break light just waiting for them to come in. Last night I drank and bought my son his car, a 2019 GR86 TRD Edition and woke up this morning to a 2k charge on my credit card and thought WTF did someone steal my amex? I checked and it wasn't for my son's car, drunk me bought a an AWE track edition exhaust w 5in Diamond Black Tips. I think I was a little mad this blue camaro was revving on me on the freeway yesterday and I want an exhaust sound that will make you shit your pants. Any advice on the downpipe, I want loud and I don't care if it smells. Smelly is my 3rd turn on. Thank you for reading if you got this far. Sorry it's so long I just feel like that teen who was in love with cars but now has a few bucks to spend. Every time I step on the gas in the Supra my heart smiles.
