I have been reading the apex fitment guide for the supra. I recently ordered 19x11 rears and 19x9.5 of the SM-10s. I want to use the OEM tire size for now. I am running Michellin Pilot Sport All Season 4s right now. The guide states that I can use OEM tires with a slight stretch. Is there any safety concern with this?

Personally I'm not a fan of the stretched look. Gives me the impression one could only afford the wheels but not the appropriately sized tires.

Some ppl think it looks cool to have the widest rim possible and the smallest width tires to clear the rear quarter panels edge/lip. Looks like curb killers to me.

My biggest worry would be ... the tire bead breaking loose for its not seated correctly at any speed.

Respectfully, unless the people commenting in this thread have specifically driven a mk5 supra extensively with stretched tires and without stretched tires you should take those opinion solely at face value.

I'd driven my car with standard fitment and with stretched. It's not going to make a difference for street driving. That amount of stretch isn't crazy but (OPINION) will not look great if the car isn't lowered. If the plan is to just use up the tires and eventually change to a wider tire anyway then you may as well use em.

If you plan to make considerable power or track it I would probably suggest spending the money on a wider tire.

I ran a much more aggressive stretch than that for years without issues. Your mileage is going to vary though depending on type of tire, road conditions, amount of driving, air pressure, etc.

No, the car will actually handle better and faster on a track. Check out tire rack’s videos on wheel widths.

BMW has been using stretched tyres on their M cars for over a decade. The E92 M3, 1M, F87 M2/C/CS comes with 245 on 9 and 265 on 10

Your 255 on 9.5 is spot on. Even the 24 Nismo Z runs 255 on 10 at the front.

The 4S is pretty numb in feel compared to its predecessor PSS so a bit of tyre stretch to preload the sidewalls will bring some of that ‘feel’ back

Stretched tires helps with squirm.. well more like stabilizing side wall twist. But 275's on 11 is bit of a stretch.. Given the front wheels are only 0.5" wider than stock (should look okay), the rear will look pretty  ..especially running all season tires.. I would just get some new summers.

For looks, go for it. Keep in mind you’ll wear the sidewall faster and most tires are not designed to be stretched (for max grip).

For track, may not be for everyone & every tire. Need to know what you’re doing, right tire & installer.

Plenty of us track guys put 275’s on 11” or even 11.5” wheels.

For the street you will be more than fine, send it.
If done properly with a softer tire, you’re absolutely right. However, there is a lot of HPDE 1, 2 or 3 (green, yellow, blue) drivers. When you look around, they’re on street (summer) tires that don’t take this process as well. So a lot depends on the tire brand & it’s designed use. Link below supporting track use - like you say, true:

Big concern with harder tires being stretched is not seating properly, having the bead outside that 80-90 degree bead seat angle. Causing the tire to have a poor seal.

If the guy/gal is as versed as you and can do it properly, know how to check for uneven wear, absolutely, go for it. But most peeps do not have as much track experience as you do and have to be careful.

seen it plenty of times, street, track, autoX, throughout various platforms. as mentioned above, M cars have come with stretched tires from factory for several generations now :drive:

You can run the stock PSS on that set up
The only issue you may run into on the street depends on where you drive most, as pothole holes and unseat the tire due to the bead not sitting ideally on the rim
Fronts are fine but a 275 on an 11" rim will suffer from bead breaks on extreme potholes
I have personally ran the stock PSS on the F80 into a BC Forged RE41 11" rear wheel and it happened to me.
I'd recommend a slightly upsize with that specific setup
265/295 would both perform great street or track and won't suffer from the stretch .
YMMV

275s on 10.5 here...and don't feel they are stretched at all.

For the sake of clarity, "stretched" can mean a lot of things to a lot of people. When I hear that, I'm thinking more stance styling with a truly skinny tire, like a 175 on an 8" or 9" rim, where the rim is significantly wider than the tire itself. That VW water-cooled guys were doing extreme versions of this a few years back. What the OP is talking about is not that kind of stretch, of course.

As for just generally putting a skinnier tire on a wider wheel, the manufacturer (and generally TireRack) publishes a rim-width guide for every size of tire. It's fairly conservative, so it you go with .5" to 1" wider than the manufacturer's recommendation, you're probably OK.

Something like a 200TW tire is a LOT more tolerant of a wide wheel because of the sidewall stiffness and the fact that most of those tires measure wider than their width would lead you to believe.

The OEM Michelins are a middle-of-the-road tire, but would likely be fine for a little while on wider wheels.

This is really just a "any low profile tire" thing these days. When 18" wheels were becoming more common a few years back, a friend of mine with an R32 on OEM wheels and tires kept bending wheels and blowing out sidewalls in potholes.

If you have bad roads...you're gonna kill tires regardless, and yes...even more often if you've upsized.

I’m definitely older, probably being too conservative. Corrected my post to the bottom line - may not be for everyone & every tire ?

275s on 10.5 here...and don't feel they are stretched at all.
