M2 comes in manual and that has more torque...

Partnering with BMW may have affected this decision IMO, they dont want competition cannibalizing sales from their sports tiers. Z4 being a convertible means its more of a luxury car, someone with an M-series would consider a roadster convertible.

I think Toyota partnered with BMW to obviously save money on development but also get that handling they can study for next sports cars.

They should partner up with Subaru more, that low CoG engine bay matters a lot.

I'm really keen on the MR2 replacement in the future, I'm sure it'll have a manual, small zippy cars and manual transmission are like white on rice.

One thing that Tada mentioned was "if the torque goes up the transmission should be able to handle it with the correct amount of plates." I think a bonus challenge for Toyota (not that it's impossible) is that they would want to engineer the transmission to handle the extra power that they have allowed for with the Supra with "easy" mods. I believe there was a number being tossed around, 700 hp?

That being said Tada's stance on the manual is definitely a lot different from how he felt about more power for the 86. His answers always seem to suggest its possibility, whereas for the extra power on the 86 he was firm with what was provided. I think we may have a good chance, hopefully.

''it must be able to cope with the amount of torque it's applicable engine produces and is capable of producing''

''It torque goes up, the manual transmission must be able to handle it accordingly with the correct number of plates''

I don't think their problem is with stock torque! But if this engine is capable of producing at least 700hp without opening it then imagine what torque it will have!I believe that's where their problem is + reliability.

If this car doesn’t have a manual... I have less faith in toyota developing a manual for anything else. I was even surprised that they created one for the new Corolla.

Would it be feasible to have a manual in a hybrid car with the correct technology?

Like the above?

If they are going to make a manual, it's going to be something that can be reliable and utilizing new tech as a mid engine, battery powered car would make the MR2 a reality at a slightly cheaper cost.

I think the 86's clutch was going out easily either by mods or from regular use after 50k miles I read. But the Lexus automatic attached into the 86 is sturdy and can handle 500+ without breaking. If Toyota releases a manual for the car, it would be either them having found the absolute limit of what the car can reliably produce and is safe to be used for street racing. Or, they unleash a ZR1 like model where the car is maxed out, manual tested with this power at full speed and what not so no mods are needed and you get factory warranty.

A 450 HP Supra with manual and somehow staying at the same weight at 80k max would be fucking ridiculous .I'd like more power, but you have to leave some for the Lexus division to play around with too.

In that case if i tune the car for 700 wheel and the auto breaks, then can i mail it to BMW and ask them to ship back a getrag?;)

I don't think the getrag would pass Tada's requirement for shift feel... Let alone a T56.

I won't comment on the power aspect, but that is for sure one thing Tada is obsessed with. He has this serious thing for direct shifters and can't stand anything less.

I made a comment about the 86 being notchy and he was like ?!?! Lol

Yep, I noticed it popping up more in interviews. Makes perfect sense.

Given this obsession, it gives me hope that the ZF8 will perform very well in the A90.

We're designing a massive transmission at the moment for seriously high power output and the impact it has on the shift actuation is very significant. Thankfully we're eliminating that by eliminating H pattern.
