I have owned a few convertibles but my Supra is a hardtop and I prefer it for the lightweight and rigidity. That said I would like to see a Targa option as it would preserve the appearance. I generally don't like the look of convertibles.

Based on the Supra's expected curb weight a carbon tub like the BMW i8 seems likely. When you compare the Lexus LC and the i8 which are close in size, the BMW is 1000lbs lighter. From this standpoint alone the collaboration makes sense.

On a less enthusiastic note both the LC and i8 use Aisin automatic transmissions and are or have optional hybrid power.

The initial speculation way back when seemed like a carbon or CFRP tub could be possible, but given all the reports of the possible price point and performance etc it seems unlikely. It would be incredibly impressive though. I just doubt that something like the BMW Z4 is going to have a cfrp tub like the i8.

The i3 and Alfa 4C does also which covers the 40-50k and 60-70k price points so hopefully it's on the horizon.

I feel a carbon tub is unlikely, largely due to price point and the fact that BMW would likely introduce a Carbon MC design first in an M car before bringing it to a "standard" car like the Z4. The i3 and i8 are exceptions, and they have done well to bring down material and manufacturing cost in both of those cars. That being said, the current M4 weighs 3400lbs using a good ol' unibody, so I'm sure the Supra/Z4 will be close to that weight as well, also with a unibody. Who knows though! God knows, we've been given next to zero information thus far, so speculating is all we can do.

After owning 10 targa TT MKIVs, I drove one hardtop NA and immediately regretted not getting hardtops since day 1.

Hardtops are best tops.

Why are the hardtops so much better? Just because of issues with the targa?

I love the idea of a targa, you get convertible-like openness but retain a coupes lines, best of both worlds in my opinion.
