Dealers will always play whatever games they can to benefit their bottom line. There were dealers tacking on 10-15k "market adjustments" on Civic Type-R's upon release. I'm a capitalist so I can't really fault them at a fundamental level.

Considering TMNA is encouraging the game:

You may have to continue to dealer shop until you can find one that will take a deposit and draft a purchase contract.

I know, it's crazy. I'm in a Type R group for fun, and most dealers still mark them up 5k.

Agreed. I think I need to speak to the sales manager. If he won't assist, then back to Toyota USA. It's shady as hell to do this kinda stuff.

Thats how it seems. I called another dealer in the area to put my name on their list, and while they are likely to stick with MSRP......they said they're gonna put peoples names in a hat.


So yeah.



The fiancee is very confused as to why this car has so much trouble from the dealers, tried to explain about how the LE are going to be very rare.

I've never heard of a dealer getting fined for marking up the price, not by Toyota or the state. Also remember that most dealers are losing money selling Camrys and Corollas so having a chance to actually sell a car at MSRP is an unusual thing these days.

Are they really losing money on the cars they are selling?? Seems like an odd business plan.

I don’t know, maybe the salesman was just making it up. Not sure why he would, as he was basically admitting that charging over MSRP is not right....I am just repeating what he said.

Perhaps my state (ND) has some strange laws...heck, retail stores can’t even open on Sundays until noon. (You should see the line up at Walmart in 1159 on Sundays )

Up by me there is a LE with 15k markup for sale and they guy posted it has 300 miles on the clock already. What are the chances this was one of the test cars that everyone drove at the summit point event? I have one on hold with a production date of 2019/02/20. If mine has 300 miles on it I may pass on it in fear that this thing was a test mule. What's everyone's thoughts?

This wont happen, to see a car new on a dealer parking lot, it need to have no owner before transferring to you. These preproduction/test mule would have needed to register to Toyota as a fleet car.

The legit test mules can't/won't get sold; however, it's not uncommon for dealers to sell demo cars with hundreds, if not thousands of miles on them. Regardless of miles, until it's been titled it's still consider "new". At least that's how it used to be.. Those cars you see in malls, airports, casinos, etc.. (hopefully) roped off.. They get driven around to different shows, displays, demos, etc.. and eventually back on the lot to be sold. I wouldn't pay MSRP let alone a markup for a "new" car with a bunch of joy riding miles on it.

Technically speaking, test mules were the new platform over the modified M2 shell. The ones that were used for auto shows and media press drives are pre-production cars.
