Is it throwing an actual visible CEL or just if you read codes using a reader?
This ^. I'm 10000% convinced that reading codes with readers is more harmful than not.

I’m actually going to change out mine soon, I just got the parts from toyota. A vanos solenoid and 2 bolts. One for exhaust and one for intake. What were the part numbers you used for the bolt assemblies?

I’m getting the code for
13070C - VANOS, exhaust, cold start: not controllable
But I got 2 bolts and one actuator ordered from toyota.

before messing with the VANOS, be sure you are replacing the right part.

The VANOS Actuators are the black electronic parts on the valve cover, and i have yet to see any actually fail on these cars. But its possible. The actuator takes 5 minutes to change.

The VANOS central valve is the bolt you brought and goes through the CAM gear into the cam shaft. replacing one or both of these parts requires special tools. Otherwise you risk damaging the camshaft or mistiming the engine. and the procedure requires removal of the valve cover and about 2-4hours of work.

So be sure yo know what you are replacing.

As mentioned above yes, the central vanos bolt will also require locking the cam gears in place to avoid messing with the timing. I did not look closely at the photo of what you had purchased.
Also is your car under warranty still?

I know what I’m replacing, I just purchased the bolts just to have everything I may need once it gets pulled off, toyota said I can return parts with no issues, if I have extra parts I don’t use. I have all the tools needed for everything. Rather just be over prepared than under haha I was just confused on all the part numbers. I also have the valve cover/ gaskets ready if they need to be replaced.

No, I tuned my car within 2 months of owner ship, and I’m over the mileage warranty lol.

Yes, I’m using a autel OBD scanner and a dealer scanner. First got the code on my Ecutek racerom and using the professional scanners to see if there were any pending codes as well.

ok, as long as you have the timing lock and setting tools if you have to replace the central valves.

I’m not sure, I used a 5w40 for a month and then got the light, so I switched back to a 0w30, everyone I know has been using a heavier weight but they’ve had no issues. So maybe just premature failure on some part

For the Actuator I'm assuming the intake and exhaust are the same one? Since i dont know if its the solenoid or the central valve.

Id rather have everything for a full swap of the actuators and central valve if needed (although i only get the code for exhaust side).

Parts List
QTY 2 - 15370-WAA01
QTY 2 - 135A0-WAA01

I started getting the same codes intermittently sometimes ill get one code another day ill get the other:
13070C - VANOS, exhaust, cold start: not controllable
130716 - Error Error target camshaft control outlet bank1

Those who swapped your solenoids did it solve your problem or did you need to change your central valve?

Any idea what's causing the failure/error?

100% agree. Leads people down a rabbit hole, for sure. If there's something seriously wrong with the car, it'll throw a CEL before it blows up.

So far mine has gone away. I have had the cold start one come back once in a blue moon.
