I've recently noticed the car makes a very odd and incredibly annoying sound while I'm driving it.
It comes on at around 70kph and gets louder as I drive faster. It sounds like a high pitched humming whistle that has no real rhythm to it. Just hummmm hum hum huuuummmmm huumm on the highway. Driving on different road surfaces somewhat changes the sound but its hard to tell if im imagining it changing or not. Making turns does not change the sound. Braking, accelerating does not change the sound. It's just always there and I hear it in my left ear.
One particular thing is, If i start the car cold and drive it to 100kph I do not hear the sound, but after 10 minutes or so it comes on. Its as if something is warming up and expanding/deforming and making this sound. If I park the car again, shut it off for a few minutes and start driving again the sound is gone but it soon comes back.
When I open the driver's side window, its louder, its definitely something outside of the car. The sound is quiet enough that my phone's microphone cannot pick it up, and if you have music on you cannot hear it but its becoming very anxiety inducing and distressing for me.
The car is completely stock on the original tires. The alignment is on point. The car has about 13,000 km on her now. Maybe its the rear tires getting worn out?
My BRZ made a similar sound after I fitted it with wide PS4S tires and lowered it. I always wondered if it was the differential making noises, or the new rear control arm bushing was transmitting more sound to the cabin or if it was the tires. I eventually sold the car partly because of this issue.
