This is an old debate. I will say that dust is a terrible problem in AZ. Drives us all cray cray!

That said I just installed a KN and noticed it was over oiled from the factory, so I intend to remove it and clean it and re-oil it myself. Have been using KN style oiled filters on a Rotaxaircraft engine for years - also tends to get over-oiled. Key is to use the cleaner and wash it thoroughly and then let it dry for a while and only oil the outside.

I was in Nevada much of the time but also AZ and it wasn't the sensor, it was dust that got by the filter and to the engine. All you have to do is hold a filter up. You can see through it small open areas everywhere. This was on several K&N filters and one that the mechanic showed me.

My filter was over oiled as well. Noticed a good amount of red liquid on the bottom of the stock air box but none of it got sucked up into the air tube. I still have the stock filter so I may revert back to that since you put the thought of k&n filters being trash into my head lol.

I learned the hard way also many years ago with the spray lube filters. Over time the oil atomizes then coats MAF sensors and throttle bodies. Since then I only run OEM filters, its just not worth the 2-3Hp gain.

This is pretty much where I'm at.

The paper filter may be somewhat restrictive but you are definitely allowing more particulate into the engine that may or may not cause premature wear.

I think a downpipe & E30 tune will suit my needs and if I want more noise I'd do an intake. But we will see.

What drop in filter brand do you guys recommend? I'm coming from the motorcycle world so idk what's good as far as cars go. I figured since K&N was a well known brand that they were a good choice lol

I ran a HKS Super Air Filter on mine when i was still using my stock air box. I had no issues but then again i only ran for about 500-1000 miles?

I've had a K&N in my last six cars, and the put one in my Supra that I just collected last Saturday. Great panel filters IMO.

ive heard theyre "washable" right? never really ran filters for OEM airboxes, i always went with an after market intake. but ive never heard anything bad about K&N.
