Good point on the Z3, Z4. Hope Toyota doesn't drag their feet or have second thoughts seeing how 86 sales are taking a dive.

Two totally different demographics and price points. MKV Supra will be about twice the price and totally different performance level. It'll also wear a Toyota badge, which will make a difference in public perception.

It is normal for niche products like the 86/FR-S to start loosing sales over it's life cycle. I posted declining sales of the Z, MX-5, Z4 and etc on the other thread as well.

And yet Mazda has managed to keep the MX-5 going after all these years without a hiatus.

Wish companies wouldn't just give up on sports cars so easily after they start declining in sales.

As we all know the old MKIV Supra had a base naturally aspirated 2JZ-GE, and a high performance twin turbo 2JZ-GTE. Assuming Toyota were to offered FT-1 in two trim levels; how should they go about this? Should a base model FT-1 go after cars like the base C7; while a high performance model will rival the likes of the of cars such as the Z06 C7, new NSX, and upcoming R36 GT-R? What current drivetrains do you believe could be used for the "two models" if you will? If history repeats itself, what would be your ideal base and flagship FT-1? Yup, a base 450hp for an average Joe like me.

if current/modified Toyota drivetrains will be used maybe something like this?

Base: $50k, 400hp+, V6 hybrid, 2GR-FXE (FT-HS concept).

Flagship: $60k, 500hp+ V8, 2UR-GSE

I definitely think that's the way to go. The lower model should at least equal the performance of the C7 while the higher model should target supercar territory cars. There will definitely be people who don't want an American car (C7), something that's like driving a video game (GT-R), or can't afford an NSX or 911 Turbo. The lower and higher end Supra models can cover the gamut of people looking for alternatives.

Another good alternative is the make a base Supra go after the new Z. There is a rumor Q60 engine will make it into the new Z, 400+hp. High performance variant should wipe the floor with high end Sportscars.

with the next gen 86 maybe Toyota will bring it upclass to better compete with the new Z? the sub 86 car could take the fun and affordable role.

sub 86 car: 20k+, 150-200hp, small lightweight, and more of a Miata competitor
next 86: 30k+, 250-300hp, AWD turbo "Celica GT-4" ;)
base Supra: $45k-$50k, @ least 400hp+
flagship Supra: $60k+, @ least 500hp+

The base model needs to be worthy of the name by itself.

I would love to see a base 911 fighter and a higher-end GT-R, NSX, 911 turbo fighter.

I would hate to see there be some base model cheap Supra competing with the Z. Would terribly cheapen the car and dilute the image, and make the whole Supra feel less special in general.

The Supra should be a 911, not a Cayman; GT-R, not 370Z; more Audi R8, not TT; more Ford GT, not Mustang; I don't even want to make the Chevy comparison. Supra should be anything but entry-level and should have a quality build with sophisticated materials and supreme performance.

Guys, I'm talking about the rumored Q60 twin turbo 3.0 engine output 400+hp in the new Z "probably Z nismo", not the current half baked Z.

Supra Mk4 back in the day was made to compete with 300ZX, it was too good, it went to compete with 911 and R34 instead. Toyota can make another Supra that go against a class above what it intended originally.

Toyota is supposedly working on a new V6 turbo for the next IS-F. if true, it would make sense to throw that drivetrain into FT1 as well.

I'd rather have a new Toyota made 3.0L V6TT than BMW sourced I6TT.
