So there was a shop I believe European Road & Race who did a tear down of a 3 series engine that had done the factory oil changes to the tee at the dealer and after about 75k the motor ran fine, but had collected sludge in quite a few places. Also keep in mind these turbos use the same oil from the pan as the engine. So IMO 10k mile oil changes is asking for stuff to blow up or at the very least not run optimally. I would say 5k at the most and will be changing every 3k, but that's just me.
So a buddy of mine said to change the oil myself and purchase the black stone oil kit. The kit is $40 and the oil analysis is free. He said this is a great way to know if your engine is burning oil or if thereā€™s any other issues in regards to the oil. I think this is a great tool as well to pretty much diagnose what your engine and oil looks like, almost like when you go get blood work done at the doctors office. Lol hopefully this helps others out as well if you guys didnā€™t know about it. Thanks for all the replies and advice guys, I appreciate it!

Thatā€™s sound advice!

Itā€™s really just a small investment for peace of mind and if you might be facing a warranty claim soon.

I just took a sample myself for the 3k mile check-in. My car hasnā€™t burned any oil so Iā€™m hoping my engine is in the clear. The Blackstone report will confirm it.

A lot of us change the oil around 1200 miles after the break-in. After that, it depends on how you use the car. If you drive like a grandma, 10k miles will be fine. If you track the car, you should do it more often. A lot of us also put in a thicker 5W-30 oil as we feel the 0W-20 factory fill is too thin.
The local Toyota dealership claims that switching to 5W-30 voids the warranty. Anyone else heard that?

I was planning on doing the oil change for my 2.0 at 5k miles (which is roughly 7 months) but the service rep also said to me today that the recommendation for the Supra is 10k miles or 1 year.
I haven't had any oil warnings nor I expect to have the infamous oil issues in the 2.0 but 10k miles also sounds excessive to me.

Paolo in the first reply is saying the longer the better on factory oil while others are replacing it much sooner. I'm really torn on what to do :dunno:

There's no wrong answer. Do what you think is right. Under normal conditions the oil will last 10k easily. Just top off when it calls for it. Some of us track the car and we change it early because the car sees a lot more hard use and for ease of mind.

Maybe I'll go for the middle ground....say 8k miles which will probably coincide with the 1 year mark.

For the price of peace of mind its pennies on the dollar. $60-$80 for an oil change is nothing. No way in hell I would go past 5k miles on engine oil.

These are high performance sports cars, even the 2.0. Theyā€™re not your Sunday church cruisers! Get that oil out of there...

The reason why I'm undecided has nothing to do with cost and everything to do with what's best for the engine.
Now having said that, I know nothing about engines. I take my cars to their scheduled maintenance service and that's pretty much it, lol
Someone suggested to let the factory oil do its thing so I figured there must be a reason why he said that. For all its vehicles Toyota recommends 5k and this is the only one in which they're suggesting 10k so why the change? That's what I'm trying to figure out

There is a theory that factory fill is specific and beneficial for the break-in, but never seen conclusive proof. But where I am, the official Toyota dealer advice is
1) a one-off oil change at 1000km (0W-20 Supra oil), then
2) every 12000km or 12 months whichever comes first.
Note that BMW here never advocates (1), just the regular svc interval (2). About 15 years ago, BMW used to advise 24k km intervals - and they realized that didn't work for our climate+usage (engine sludge) and halved it.

10k miles (16k km) does sound a bit long, but BMW engines do go on longer oil intervals, compared to the typical japanese car schedule. BMWs also supposedly have oil sensors that check the oil, and the mileage countdown to oil change is dynamic according to usage. ie: more city driving -> shortened mileage interval. I have not observed this in my Supra (mileage is too low), but i have noticed dynamic intervals in other daily driver BMWs.

Personally, I wouldn't go longer than 8000 miles/12 months for an oil change. Think your plan is reasonable.

Makes total sense that they would go with a BMW service interval instead of the typical Toyota for this car. I just googled the Z4's schedule and it's 10k miles/1year for oil and filter.
I'll reach the year before the 10k miles for sure so I'll stick with their schedule....also because I'm not even constantly punishing the engine, on weekdays the car barely sees any use. Thanks

My Blackstone report just came in. Looks like Iā€™m off to a good start with this B58TU engine. Iā€™m going to run another report at 5,000 miles to see if anything changed.

Stats:
- 2021 with June 2020 build date
- Hard engine break-in
- Dumped factory oil at 1200 miles and switched to Liqui Molly 5w-30
- 1800 miles on lab sample oil
- iDrive showing max oil level at all readings
