Toyota new model 86 2021 full model change engine also possibility to install FA 24 type

Toyota 86 Full model change in 2021
Toyota announced that it will develop the next model of sports coupe "86" for youth. Development is carried out jointly with Subaru Production will be produced at Gunma Manufacturing Co., Ltd. and will be released in 2021.

2.4 L horizontally facing FA 24 type engine is installed in next 86
According to some reports, it is reported that 2.4 L engines will be installed in next 86.

Since it is said that it is a joint development of Subaru, it may be that a newly developed engine mounted on Forrester 2.5L downsizing horizontally opposed FA type 24 engine will be installed.

Why is not FA20 turbo?
Although the reason is unknown, it may be due to the exhaust gas control problem, perhaps it can not clear the high rotation type + turbo engine exhaust gas regulation

The FA 24 engine may generate a large torque from the low revolution range and the red zone may be an engine with the characteristic of around 6,500 revolutions.

2021 Which 86 platforms will be fully remodeled?
The platform of the next generation 86 is expected to have a high possibility of SGP base if a horizontally opposed engine is installed.

In addition to a coupe with low utility, there may also be simultaneous releases, etc. like 86 shooting breaks considering practicality.

Next period 86 MT abolition?
Toyota's newly developed 6-speed MT will be adopted for the next Corolla hatchback so I do not think that the setting of the manual transmission car will be lost for the time being.

However considering the joint development with Subaru, it may be that a dual clutch type transmission to be adopted also in rumored next WRX will be installed.

Here are The FA24 Engine Specs:

The FA24 was introduced in 2018 exclusively for the 2019 model year Subaru Ascent. The bore is increased compared to prior FA20 engines, increasing displacement to 2,387 cc.[12] Direct injection and a turbocharger are used to provide output comparable to a naturally aspirated 6-cylinder engine, and the FA24 uses "regular" (87 AKI) fuel.[13]

  • Displacement: 2,387 cc
  • Bore: 94 mm
  • Stroke: 86 mm
  • Compression Ratio: 10.6:1
  • 2019+ USDM Subaru Ascent
    • Power: 260 hp (194 kW; 264 PS) at 5,600 RPM
    • Torque: 277 lbā‹…ft (376 Nā‹…m; 38 kgā‹…m) at 2,000-4,800 RPM

Sounds to me, that the FA24 Engine has the possibility to use a turbo. I hope toyota will equip the next 86 with a turbo, to make the car even more interesting for tuner and 86 fans.

Coming from a first gen 86 owner from 2017, I'm feeling pretty salty right now

While if they do a second gen , about 250-260 is what the people want and in my opinion would be ideal , the new 2.4 liter subaru engine is difficult to be put into the car . In about 2020 the regulations about emissions and noise are becoming even stricter in most countries , so it is difficult to justify this engine which has about the same emissions as the current engine . The current engine the 86 has, is not so good for emissions and mileage, so my bet is they are trying to find a way to make the car go faster while meeting future regulations at the same time. In order for this to happen they must downsize and maybe use some form of electricity.

The 2.4l engine sounds appealing, assuming weight is the same or similar. These cars, while well balanced, are already a bit front biased.

Having owned both a 2013 FRS and now a 2017 BRZ, I can say the 2017 cars are definitely quicker, due to the gearing change (no not the whopping 5hp/tq increase ;) ).

While I'm not a fan of boxer engines and how they deliver power, they work for this car because of the insanely low center of gravity.

How is power delivery of boxer engines compared to other engines? Isn't power delivery engine specific rather than layout specific? You do not like Porsche Flat6 power delivery?

I guess I should clarify I am talking about Subaru NA boxer engines. They just have non-existent torque in the low/mid range and on the BRZ/86 FA20, have the annoying torque dip. I have not driven a Porsche so cannot comment.

Van Zyl also reiterated that the next-gen 86 was still a joint venture with Subaru by saying, "it would have to be developed with Subaru." An earlier report from Japan indicated that the new models would switch to a 2.4-liter powerplant, likely a version of the 260-horsepower (194-kilowatt) unit in the Subaru Ascent. It would also have a lower center of gravity. Current speculation puts the debut in 2021.

Honestly, Iā€™d be more excited to see confirmation of a next gen 86/BRZ with that 2.4L boxer putting out 260HP, than the turbo 4 Supra that is apparently the entry level version. But the presence of a 20i 4T Supra is what worries me for the future of 86. The 20i engined Supra would be putting out comparable power and torque numbers to the 2.4T boxer from Subaru... so who would want the likely heavier, more expensive, less reliable BMW based 20i Supra if you can get a lighter MkII 86 with similar power and Subaru reliability for less money? That kind of product overlap makes no sense for Toyota. I mean, it would take me a grand total of one nano second to pick a 2.4 mkII 86 over a heavier and more expensive 20i Supra!

The next gen 86 is not confirmed, but the 20i Supra pretty much is... this has me thinking that there will not be a mkII 86 at all, and that Toyota will let the 20i Supra stand in as their entry level sports car, with the 30i 6T as the halo. Much as I hate it, it makes no financial sense for Toyota to keep developing two separate sports cars in two separate joint ventures.

the 86 is likely going to be discontinued in the next two years from all that I've heard on this side; a gen 2 car is vaporware at this point.

as for the Supra, I think Toyota will bring the higher end car to the US market, but it will be badged TRD and possibly toned down a bit.

Aw... :/ The poor 86... at least we still have it for now while it lasts.

And that is a welcome relief that weā€™ll still probably get the A90 GR or GRMN, whatever spec it will be as a TRD.

I suppose the 86 eventually going away does leave open a new window for a Celica (and the AWD Celica GT4 that Tada mused about doing) and better room for the recently mentioned possible MR2. But those are all still just rumors or Toyota banter to the press.

I hope Akio still gets his ā€œthree brothersā€ in some form.

I know you and others are bringing about some good stuff for Lexus so not worried there.

The good spec Supra is (likely) secured at least, thanks :)
