New rumors from C&D: 2020 Supra to get BMW inline six engine / B58 & S58 chat

If the new Supra does indeed come with a BMW motor, woud you still buy the car?

if the costs of integrating a 6MT into a BMW based platform are too prohibitive, to integrate a toyota engine into a BMW based platform would be extreme.

plus tada said I6 is mandatory for a supra.

Nope, not going to happen. An i6 and V6 sit differently in an engine. No way in hell they would do something so ridiculous.
A Straight 6 fits longitudinally - hence, the nature of straight 6 cars have a long hood. A V6 (even with turbos) can easily fit into that engine compartment with engine mounts. It will be nearly half the length with less weight. Do we know if the B58 engine uses a iron block? Toyota can save some weight by using a V configuration with aluminum blocks. (-100 or -200 lbs)

Dead horse is super dead.
So, no V6 is confirmed from Toyota insider?

the car absolutely is BMW powered and the I6 is the main element, but the remaining question I have without actually seeing an open engine bay is if the motor is truly still a B58.

I feel it may technically be a "new" motor given some refinements, but I haven't had a chance to ask some of the friends I still have over on that side.

Try doing a swap in any car that came with straight 6 engines from the manufacturers. You'll realize how much room there is in the engine bay.

LMAO.
obviously it can be done it has nothing to do with feasibility, but it still requires additional development costs and isn't free...never has there been a coupe chassis/platform developed to offer both an inline 6 and V6 configuration from the factory. Remember, this was & is a cost saving project from the start..

Look at it this way, it has taken Toyota 4 years to get the Lexus developed 2.0 4 cyl turbo onto the Toyota Crown & Harrier, cars that are pretty much exclusive to Japan...

Cool, I am dreaming it will be the new M2 performance config at 405hp, but will get comments BMW would never let this happen...

Just a mere speculation for the V35TT

BMW have done inline 4, Inline 6 (NA and Turbos) and V8 for the F10 and E60.

Oh well, I can just dream about then.

Yes there has.

Every Mercedes 43 AMG that gets replaced by 53 AMG, is going from V6 to I6, which is more complicated than going from a longer I6 to a shorter V6, that is as wide if not less than a V8, for which the engine bay has also been engineered. And we know the new Supra can have a the 2UR engine (5.0l V8).

But Mercedes has had I6 and V6 Gasoline and Diesel, with and without forced induction, supercharger or turbocharger, in the same platform/car/model long before, as they went from I6 to V6 90° to V6 60° and now again back to I6.

That does not mean it will be the case of the new Supra, but it is technically and financially feasible. It does not make a lot of sense form a market perspective though, unless however there are big differences, like for example if the V6 were hybrid.

i guess i should have been more clear...a sports car platform, not a boat with 2 doors  but I digress, wasn't my point, of course it is "feasible" but it would still require additional development & tooling costs which we all know is at a premium in this project..

Sadly, 2UR is dead.

EURO emissisions standards mean high compression, high revving (and therefore high output) Naturally aspirated engines are a thing of the past.

RIP M156, 4.0 V8, 2UR etc....

It sucks, coz N/A is best.
