I know this is an old topic, I was hesitating about doing this update
On the brake issue, but was holding off due to supply problems ( if they bricked the Ecu) now hopefully that is
Resolved, so is there any current problems with having Toyota techs
Do this update???

Brakes? You mean the push start crank going the wrong direction issue?

If so, I'm not taking mine in.

Mine is tunable and I've been holding off on getting a tune until this is done, but have very hesitant to have it done. Will likely make the 2hr trip to a dealer who has successfully done the updates for members here in FL.

I took mine in for the brake recall fix. I picked a dealership near me that had multiple Supra techs and had confirmed success with this fix on prior cars.

Full screen CarPlay is nice. Bench unlocking the ecu for tuning is inconvenient but not the worst thing in the world.

If you really don’t want to get it done, you don’t have to. There’s a recall bulletin that describes exactly what causes the issue and what to expect if you’ve triggered that issue, so just avoid that sequence of actions and be aware of what it feels like if you triggered the issue.

My wife often drives my cars, so I didn’t want to take any unnecessary risk by leaving an open recall unfixed.

Nothing has changed, everyone should do this update. Especially, if you're considering a clone or an overseas unlock. I don't believe the bricking issue is widespread - that said, you'll be in a tight spot if it happens.

I did worry about it, got mine done, and everything was fine. Took a few hours, but they gave me an overnight loaner. Avalons are pretttyyy nice :).

There is some weird combination where if you aren't holding the brake pedal firm enough or slightly release the brake and you accidentally flinch and double press the ignition, the crank can momentarily crack a half turn in the wrong direction causing the brake booster to fail.

The fix is in the firmware on the car. They flash the ECU with updated software, this has caused a minority of customers to get cricket ECUs and/or head units. Likely due to human error in the installation process.

Was painless I called spoke to the service advisor in detail. Car was in and out in a few hours update completed. Wouldn't leave an open recall when its in terms of a safety feature.

I heard another update is rolling out later this year. I’m skipping the brake recall for now. I’m not going to keep paying $800 for remote bench unlock +$500 for an updated tune file every time they release an update.

I’m the only person that drives my car and can start it properly.

Thanks brother really appreciate the detailed answer. My car is a 2022 and has full apple screen play (not sure if that has anything to do with it)

I noticed you recommend that if someone is planning to unlock ECU, to get the recall done. I assume that is so once you unlock you don’t have to risk going back to the dealer for the recall?… anyway of knowing if my car falls under the affected vehicles (with the exception of carfax of course)

You can call a dealer with the VIN, but since you have Full Screen CarPlay, It's likely it's already done.

Go to your Toyota account. It should also show the recalls on your vehicle

Just need to get another bench unlock, call around the shops in your area that specialize in BMW's and track prepping cars and ask for a recommendation for a shop that can handle bench unlocks. $200 for a local shop vs $500 for a 'known' tuner shop vs the $800 for a remote unlock...
