I've actually been thinking about that last part a bit for a while. If a group were to crack the encryption, or even bypass it using some sort of voltage hacks, how much would they even make from that? It wouldn't just be for supras, but all the Bosche DME's using the new encryption right? They wouldn't make millions upon millions of dollars, but I am sure there is some financial gain to be had.

I guess the only real problem is keeping the process proprietary so you can make all the money you can off it before someone else figures it out. Sounds...familiar...
Idk about millionsā€¦ tbh if youā€™re a security research group with those skills you probably make millions doing far less work.

i just find it ironic that toyota advertised this car as a tuner platform but barring 2020s (and some select 2021s), you have to go through a lot of hoops and hurdles to be able to fully tune the car (excluding jb4 and other piggbacks).
Toyota would benefit in no way to having the ECU wide open for tuners to do what they want. If anything, they would have to spend more to deny warranty claims when Jimmy the tuner down the street blows his car up and puts it back to stock to take to the dealer.

Correct, this is why I said they wouldn't make millions upon millions of dollars. The amount of research and execution to crack these ECU's isn't worth the money to them I am guessing.

Arenā€™t there others using MG1/MD1 ecus (VAG/Ford) that choose to NOT have this level of security? While I believe liability will be the downfall of humanity, I refuse to believe Toyota was silent on this decision. The OEMs have complete control over their tier 1s. (Worked for a GM supplier of the year) No chance Bosch went rogue. Hurts a little extra knowing Toyota stuck the knife in, imo.

Are there multiple generations of MD1/MG1? Seems like VAG/Ford have been down this road before back in 2016?

If this is the new standard approach for ECUs it seems like engine tuning days are over. Stand-alones or supercars will be the only options. It is far easier for them to lock than it is for us to unlock, next time there wonā€™t be the lucky few buying a first model year car to clone.
Iā€™m pessimistic by nature, the big picture is not looking good. Anyone know if right-to-repair has any grounds on this?

Yeah, why have them unlocked and allow tuners to get 600hp when Toyota can beef up the horsepower, slap a big spoiler on it, put a targa top, add 15k to the sticker and rename it as a special edition?? Same with Ford and the Dark Horse...

edit: Assuming Toyota is going to do a Heritage edition or other edition.

I wish they would already, S58 @600hp is perfect and saves most of us the hassle and would have a warranty!

"Tuner" in the mainstream doesn't usually mean "tuning cars". It's mostly "putting on lowering springs and nice wheels".

Those of us taking it a few steps further aren't really taken into consideration.

I want 500whp, then I'm happy. But I don't want it bad enough to go through all the trouble of unlocking ecu's and all this other expensive crap. So, I will remain happy with my stock tune. The car is pretty awesome off the showroom floor.

At this point a stateside solution is not realistic, itā€™s not possible for femto to crack that ecu so far before everyone else without receiving information from the source or hiring technical employees from the source to make this technically and economically viable.

I think one of the local tuners with market share in the affected ECU base has to make an effort to group us all together across multiple forums, arrange trustworthy and reliable logistics with femto and negotiate better margins and prices. Iā€™m new here, but from what I gather Visconti attempted this but did not succeed in the trust aspect (referring strictly to the logistics process) or to gather the scale required.

Seems to me that the main issues are either trust in the process or price.. trust can be solved with transparency and price can go down Iā€™m sure. Volume is whatā€™s needed.

There are many people that don't trust Visconti.

Iā€™ve noticed.. canā€™t say anything myself because I have no experience with them, but I can see that theyā€™re not it.

is there a brand everyone trusts enough with the resources to put this all together if thereā€™s a collective action to get behind in the right numbers?

Every thread promising unlocking that fizzles out will become a blue ball thread. While there were no guarantees at purchase many of us have had our plans dashed, tough pill to swallow at $60k.
I personally have my line in the sand, I wonā€™t spend thousands on non-value-add services like unlocking and cloning (different than tuning). The car gets garaged for winter, if there isnā€™t a <$1000 obd unlock by next summer a new TTRS is just as fast while sounding better and no more worrying about traction! ;)
