Spoke with a dealer this week and she told me that I can provide earnest money to essentially reserve a car @ MSRP. The only catch is that it’s non refundable UNLESS the car arrives and it not the agreed spec, damaged, or the car never arrives. I am super intrigued and want to pursue this deal. What should I be skeptical about? How do I make sure this process is as smooth as possible? She said it could take up to 6 months. First time car buyer so it’s much appreciated.

This process usually differs from dealer to dealer. I would ask around to other dealers in your area and see if any of them offer refundable deposit at MSRP.

They should offer refunds. Nonrefundable is always not the answer imo.

This isn't that unusual actually, and what kind/how much of a deposit do they want? $500? $1000?

As long as they can also guarantee that there's no forced add-ons or markups, I'd say go for it.

I searched your post history and see you're in the southeast and posted in the no dealer markup thread. Contact Warren Cox at Beaman toyota: [email protected] or 270-217-4930 and you can get on the list with no deposit at MSRP.

You can let him know that his local black supra guy referred you. If you are set on the purchase tell him you're ready to buy at MSRP as soon as one comes in. I got mine in about 2-3 months. I'd say 6 is a long time and that dealership either has a long wait list or they're a small dealership that barely gets allocations. Beaman is the largest Toyota dealer in the state.

I'll make sure to speak with the dealer and get an agreement on a price before I deposit earnest money. They are asking for $1000 and will refund if the car never arrives (idk what their time frame is) or if its wrong specifications based on what we agreed upon.

This has been the "best" dealer in my area as far as allocations go. I'll keep searching.

Any idea if Beaman delivers to local toyota dealers? I'll definitely give this salesman a shout. Appreciate it!

i don't think it's that bad. I could get bumped into a '24 right? lol
The amount of people waiting for MT that took more than 6 months is way more then the lucky ones that took a couple months. Some are still waiting from last year.

I don't know but I'm pretty sure the answer is no. Dealers in general are more willing to sell to people who are willing to make things easier for them, so being able to come on site shortly after it arrives to take care of paperwork and drive it off yourself is going to make you more of a priority in their eyes.

When I sold Toyotas we stopped taking refundable deposits and made them all NON-REFUNDABLE. Doing this weeded out the people that would place deposits at 5 plus dealerships to see who gets the car first. If you place a deposit make sure you fully understand what you’re doing, price, spec, markup/no markup accessories they might want to put on etc…Also being open to color and option will definitely get you a car sooner. Tell them you’re open and call you if any Supra becomes available, you can choose to buy it or skip it w/o losing your place in line. I just saw the post on top of mine, it’s very unlikely any dealership will dealer trade a Supra, never seen it before.
Good luck…

With dealers not knowing if they're even getting any allocation, I think it's totally fine to offer refundable and have a list. If A passes, B buys, refund A... Clearly indicating to customer where they're at on the list. After all, are dealers special ordering Supra's and afraid they can't sell. for sure in some areas, some dealers can't/won't especially small ones but no excuse for high volume dealers.
