Hello,

I was just browsing the ol’ BMW forums and happened to come across this gem. If anyone was worried too much about the B58, just know that we have at least a good stage 2 tune.

If any of you have followed recent BMW tuning for the B58, one of the earliest to crack the new ECU was Mission Performance. They recently managed to flash the transmission. They upped the amount of torque its clutch pack could take and removed its torque limiter.

The result is a 340i equipped with the B58 making 435whp and 457wtq with SAE correction on a 91 and e85 blend. I would say that is quite a lot for a bolt on 340i without the TU revision.

Mission Performance says these numbers are achievable with only 93 octane and no other modifications. Which means this car makes as much as most BPU A80 TT’s.

435whp is more than most BPU A80s

To crack more than about 400whp on BPU you're really pushing those turbos well out of their efficiency range, and the standard fuel system will be running well over 90% DC which is not ideal. IT can be done, sure, but not without reliability compromises.

Plus the mass of those shitty twins. Going to single saved me 20kg I reckon, and I'm only 490whp on 98RON (should crack 580whp on E85)

Ugh... the problem I have with ethanol is its fucking rare to find near me... My MKIV is on 100% e90 and I never drive it because mpg is awful and e90/85 is so far to get from my house. I do have a flexfuel sensor I need to install and tune for so I can at least drive it, just need to get it done.

I dont think Ill ever go e85 on the MKV when I get it... whatever pump can do safely is fine by me.

Sorry to hear that Turbro, I run Ethanol all season on mine with ProEFI and have considered tuning my 997tt on it as well. I have a station 12miles from home and also keep a 55gal drum of it in my home garage.

Ya I think this summer Im going to find that 55 gallon drum connection. I feel like its a must for where I am and I just need to do this. No e85 within 30 miles of my house

FWIW, there's a lot more headroom in the USDM turbos and fuel system. I did 468WHP 509TWQ and 11.3 @ 125MPH when BPU. With a single 6266 and 100% stock fuel system it put down 560WHP (backed down to a 'safer' 545WHP -- A/F still 11.6) and went 11.0 @ 130MPH with clutch issues preventing a better run.

Ah yes, my bad, you got the steel turbos and 550cc injectors. I'm so used to the ceramics and 440s.

I lot of the guys will run single on the 440s, but I don't like to run my inj at over 85% DC...

Few problems I see:

"flash the transmission and upped the amount of torque its clutch pack could take"
Exactly how? just software change, or was their part replacement/changes?
Whats the cost? Is is the same price as bring a 2jz up to 500RWHP?
Whats the reliability? Did the change mean the auto tranny and B58 will go pop within 20k miles?

I'm tempted to think that if your going to spend decent amounts, a 2JZ could be more cost effective, allowing bigger horsepower gains for less cost and higher reliability.

Moreover , given an A80 TT6 would cost you a fraction the price of a new A90, then surely it would be a far superior option with all the excess funds you would have put into a well established and proven platform. Why spend all that huge money on a A90, when you could take an A80, and make it monster in power and handling that no A90 will ever touch for remotely the same price.

Most of all, its a case of praying you can keep a warranty on an A90 after making any changes.
Well for one, yes, they increase the actual pressure applied by the clutch packs, two the zf trans is pretty tough, three a tune is less than 1k, and four, if the new Supra is going to always cost more and be less proven, then why would anyone want a new Supra if the old one is proven and cheap. It’s because I want a car I can drive everywhere and have modern conveniences while maintaining a fun driving experience.
