MKV Manual Swap?

2020 3.0 Supra Premium
Now that the Supra is available in manual transmission, appropriately designed parts must be available with reasonable difficulty to install. Are any shops doing manual swaps and what is the cost likely to be?

My ‘20 Supra trades in for 37k according to KBB and manual MKV Supras are available at 60k. I imagine it’s cheaper to do a manual swap than to trade.

More power to you, id actually like to see it happen just cause. lol. Not sure what the transmission costs from toyota, but dont buy the oem clutch thats for sure lol overpriced

Definitely doable, and I'll be surprised if someone hasn't done it already
Here's the typical checklist:
Gearbox (Supra, Z4, M2 & M3?)
Wiring for the gearbox and clutch switch: either full firewall harness or some degree of rewire/new wires (Toyota or DIY)
ECU reprogram/clone to MT software (someone confirm if the ECUs are the same between AT/MT/X5?
Clutch and flywheel (upgrade it)
Pedal module (Toyota)
Trimming of carpet
MT center console and maybe some brackets underneath (Toyota)
Center driveshaft the same? (Toyota, Z4?)

Would definitely make sense if M2/3 boxes are interchangeable with minimal changes, since finding crashed M2/3 isn't that difficult, especially as all of these cars get older and less valuable.

You'll want the MT's 3:46 rear diff too. It would be a complete DOG with the 3:15.

Trans, driveshaft, and diff, new from Toyota, you're looking at about $8,000 right there. The entire center console is different, and the clutch pedal, hydraulics (need a new master cylinder reservoir, etc), shifter & linkages, etc...you're looking at a minimum of $2,000 there. Now add the 25-30 hours of labor, and there's another $5,000. After all that, you're still left with a five year-old, two-port, inferior suspension, first generation car.

Maybe worth the trouble on a 2021+ version, but I see no point in doing it to a MY2020. Take the hit, wipe your tears, and buy an actual MT. I'm seeing some in the mid 50s when they actually pop up for sale.

I believe you will need to swap the wiring harness which is not worth the effort.

The drive ratios of the 8AT are fantastic and the shifts are lightening fast. The 6MT suffers from horrible rev hang in the 1-2 and 2-3 shifts.

It would probably only make financial sense on a wrecked a90 rebuild where you need those parts anyway, otherwise you’re going to end up about the same

I actually would like the taller diff. I like a first gear thats useable on twisty roads where a Sports car was designed to be. of course in the States where everyone is obsesses with 1/4 mile times and stoplight acceleration it's different but this car for a 3 litre turbo 6 that makes close to peak torque from under 2000rpm all the way to 6 grand or so it's geared short. 100klm/hour is around 2200 rpm from memory compared to a 5.6 Gen111 Chev in a Pontiac GTO. The GTO is turning 1700rpm at that speed in 6th gear and makes less torque at that rpm than the Supra which makes for great freeway cruising and economy. So it would give an extra useable gear on the tight and twisty stuff and a more relaxed cruise and better economy on a freeway but with a greater 0-60 foot time which I can personally live without.

Agreed!!! Seems runs around 3200 rpm at 82ish for me. It should have been slightly taller. Would have loved to see 2800 or so at 82-85.

i wouldn’t be opposed to swapping it out.

Yea nether would I. The difference is 10% taller which would be perfect on the manual.

82 mph in 6th in the manual, with OEM tires is 3032 rpm. 85 mph is 3145 rpm.

With the ZF 8, 82mph in 8th is 2089 rpm, 85 mph is 2165 rpm.

For the MT, Is that from the calculation or car? That seems to be what my car says, but not my gps. Car speed is off in mine, need to BimmerCode it to normal. I still Wish gearing was a little lower rpm at 85 would be killer. 85-90 is the going highway speeds here by me

It's math, and can't be argued with or changed, unless you change the tire diameters. It is 100% accurate.

You can play with it yourself with any of the hundreds of gearing calculators out there.

No shit it’s math, but I wasn’t sure if that was the numbers you mentioned. it’s why I was asking if your numbers were the actual calculation from ratios or if it was what you were seeing while driving rpm vs the Speedo.
