In all fairness, the reliability hasn't stood the test of time just yet. We've been over the differences between BMW's old design and this newly used B58. Although we've heard Toyota poked about with the motor, we must take into consideration the fact that this motor came to fruition only after Toyota's involvement. No one would even be considering the 2JZ swap if the B58 was a proven reliable engine at high power. The biggest step backwards is the B58
The 2J is a marvel in itself but it is an old motor. Given the aftermarket R&D involved in the 2J it makes sense that this A90 would use it for competition...there hasn't been enough time to develop performance spec parts for this B58 and utilizing a 2J with known tunability would be best at this point in time. The JDM market still hasn't had sufficient time to develop performance upgrades for the B58 and at this point, using the 2J would be easy and efficient. However, this doesn't put this B58 out of the running. It needs a fair shot, and I'm sure it will surprise many.
