If the 385hp version is anything like the BMW Z4’s 382hp engine then this may mean swapping out the 2020 Supra’s cylinder head with the integrated exhaust manifold for the traditional 6-port exhaust cylinder head and any associated hardware that differs from the integrated version including its header and turbo.

...Unless they’ve gone about it a different way since current Supra engine has been tested in modified form up to 700hp or so according to Tada-san in an earlier interview.

I asked Tada-San about the head in a slightly different context, basically, "Why did you guys go with an integrated manifold?" He said that it was for emissions purposes, but he doesn't believe that the integrated manifold makes enough of an emissions difference to matter in the long run, and that it was possible that they'd return to the individual runner design if there was a design advantage to that. He said that it wasn't a performance hindrance to them tho.

I have a feeling they'll stick with the current head for a bit. I don't think they'll have any issue getting 400hp out of the current setup with minor tweaks for reliability.

He just responded when I asked about when......

Posted your quote over on the supramkv forums.

Edit: Also, we have known this was coming, the question is when? Do you have an estimate?

Months, not years. The First Edition will be good to show off but not to own for actual performance driving. Unless you're in Europe where the same restrictions as seen with Z4 M40i will still apply.

I've just googled and found the thread. Looks like these guys are totally convinced it's Toyota driving the process, and they don't seem to be sufficiently well versed in BMW ways. They also seem to be entertaining the idea that it's going to be a Toyota specific motor instead of the same B58B30O1 used in M340i and US Z4 M40i.

I pity the fools.

Note the model year letter:

All I can say is ynguldyn doesn't really post nonsense. If he posts about it you can be almost certain it is fact. Take that as you wish.

The motor very well may be the same as the Z4 but that still doesn't justify Toyota having a mid cycle refresh literally months after the car is released. Nobody does that, not even BMW.

Also, don't get me wrong, I would love for the 382hp version to be in the Supra. But again, it just seems really unlikely that they would pull something like that. I don't think any manufacturer has ever done something like that. Why wouldn't they just release the car with that motor if it's exactly the same as the Z4 revision?

Lol this is amazing.

Z4 announced with a 4.5s 0-60. Supra announced with a 4.1s 0-60. 2 days later BMW announces it's actually a 3.9s 0-60.
Z4 reviews say it drives well. Supra reviews say drives really well. One day later BMW insider announces Supra engine gets a pre-facelift power boost.

Either Toyota is doing bad business, or BMW is petty as fuck.

I agree, it doesn't totally make sense but who knows. And it's not like it would be a total refresh, they just have to put the other version of the engine in, probably doesn't even require anything else(maybe a thing or two, not much)to change to swap over.

Wouldn't be too different from BMW releasing the "competition" model a few months after the release of their M cars now.

I do have a problem with these 385HP or 400PS statements as in the recent interviews Tada-san was like why do you need more power? it's perfectly balanced. Maybe he's playing?
I don't know if anyone would call +65HP a GRMN vehicle. Hopefully it'll be 400+PS for GRMN... Anyhow, so many speculations.

So conflicted now especially if I buy a Launch edition now and few months later 385 comes up at the same or cheaper price (deals/sales or whatever) and so called upgrade parts costs $$$.. I'll be pissed off!

The M2 took 3 years for the Competition to release and the M3 was nearly 2 years iirc. Does this insider gentleman think it's gonna replace the current model like how the M2C did or be an optional package like the M3s "Competition Package"?

I don't believe that for a second. That's just bad business, and Toyota doesn't do bad business lol.
Maybe I'm the only one interpreting it this way, but I think he means the current car that is coming to market is 385bhp and not talking about the GRMN version or a mid cycle refresh. This could also just be an easter egg for us from Toyota. @Guff did the car feel more powerful than the stated 335hp... say perhaps more like a BPU Supra with the boost turned up a bit?

I don't know how much sense this makes honestly. It seems we have contradicting information. Unless the horsepower figure is just a coincidence of tuning the B58B30M1, which I sincerely doubt, then there are hardware differences.

Chief among which is the head, as we have discussed at length. Now as Guff states, Tada-san said all parts would be backwards compatible, but I kind of doubt he means the head is switchable back to a 6-port head. Now, I am certain that is possible as I have seen few differences between the M1 and O1 variants. However, this would require a new exhaust manifold and the head itself.

I am curious what others will predict will happen. I know for a fact that Toyota will not give away their easiest power boost only a few months after launch. That would alienate the early adopters of Toyota's cherished 1,500 Launch Editions, not a great way to boost the public's image of an already controversial car. Similarly, I also recall that all the cars at the SEMA garage event had the integrated turbo as we have been seeing since its public launch. I predict that Toyota will either put the O1 variant in at launch, or they will wait for at least a year or two before they switch engines.

I'm talking newly released M cars. From the F90 M5 on, the Comp models are now coming out very shortly after the regular M models. Same is happening with X3/4M and also M8. What I've quoted is what he has posted on the subject. If you guys want you can ask him more specifics as I linked the thread in the 1st post.
